If it's not one thing...

Monday, January 21, 2013

My knee was fine today, just a tiny bit stiff. But I planned to run for an hour today and had to quit at 46 minutes because I strained something on the other side in my groin. Bummer. Makes me want to whine. lol! I iced it when I got home, but it is still sore. I am taking a rest day tomorrow, and possibly on Wednesday as well, to see if I can't get healthy. The PT at the gym suggested more bike time and less treadmill time for a while to ease up on the old joints. He also showed me another stretch to try to alleviate some of the tenderness.

I would have had to take a rest day tomorrow anyway, because the weather is supposed to be wicked. I live near Lake Erie and we get this weather called Lake Effect snow. We had white outs today and are expecting another 2 feet of snow overnight. Along with this we are getting severe wind chills, so I don't want to take Cooper for long walks until it warms up a little. That effectively forces me to ease up a little on the exercise. I will probably make use of my rower for the next couple of days!

With all that snow, you, my friend, need a pair of XC skis. :-)

    Wow, 2 feet of snow!
That is great that you have the bike indoors to ride due to the weather and for your injury.

It is very hard to take a rest day when you are as driven as you are! You are used to the physical exertion and working through some of the pain. But when you are put in a position where it isn't SAFE to keep doing what you normally do, it's horrible news, isn't it?? I had one of those days Sunday, but I had a great time taking the day off as well.

I sometimes feel like if I don't keep at it, I will stall completely. But I know that now, so try to be nice to your joints... they are the only FREE ones you get! The replacements are very expensive!

I hope tomorrow is a better day, and keep stretching! Plus, you may have to break your running into 2 segments of 30 minutes with a stretch break in between. That's how I got over the half-way cramps and muscle pulls. Gives you time to build back up as well.

Good luck, and my parents are headed straight at you. They will arrive in Friendship, NY tomorrow in the snow. My mother is so not impressed. I am sure they will be there less time that she expected because she DOES NOT want to have anything to do with the 5 degrees they have today!!! Not to mention the house is going to be FREEZING!

Well, I am done beating myself up for the day, so I am off to the showers!

Stay warm. Sorry to hear you pulled some more muscles, hope you get better soon. So you are where all the snow is, I'm about 1 hour from Port Huron so no snow but still freezing over here, plus closed schools.

Good for you that you are committed to fitness, but it sounds like a couple of rest days in front of the fire...some stretches...a hot cup of tea or coffee are in order. Take care of the muscle/joint strains.

I experienced lake effect snow once in my life. Couldn't get the car out to go to the Nutcracker on Christmas Day. We COULD have walked to the public transportation in Cleveland, 2 blocks away, but thought everything was stopped. The experience was cool for a Florida native. Got to make my first snowman, and tried cross country skis on the street.

Wouldn't want that 5 degree below weather as a steady diet!!

Didn't Lake Effect snow used to be in December until the lake froze? Take care of your injuries. The easier you take it, the quicker they'll heal.

Ouch! I hope you feel better soon. Keep stretching and you can use heat therapy after your third day if you are still sore. Maybe you can take some ibuprofen too if you can tolerate an NSAID, it will help decrease any inflammation. I say this as a licensed massage therapist with 12 years of experience taking care of injured patients in a medical practice. Self massage can also be great too if you can access the area, but groin pulls can be pretty painful to massage. Whatever course you take, take it easy for the next day or two and good luck!

You rest and take care of that knee.

When I injure something on one side (ankle, knee ...) I tend to overcompensate and injure something on the other side, too. Youch.

The snow can't make up its mind here. First we're getting a lot. Then we're not. Then, maybe parts of Massachusetts. No one disputes that the bitter cold arrives tomorrow.

Meanwhile, take advantage of the muscle strain to read and rest and stay out of the cold.

That is a lot of snow! That rowing machine is going to really come in handy I think! Hope the rest days help get you back up to full speed.
