Race Pace Epiphany & Pics

Sunday, January 20, 2013

The professional photos came out for the Hot Chocolate 15K I did last week. Of course I looked up mine, my husband's, and my friends'.

One of my friends who is fast, her finish line photos look almost like footage I've seen of people collapasing over finish lines like a bowl of spaghetti. She told me if I ever showed anyone the pics, she'd beat me to death with a stick. :)

When I saw her finish line pic I had a visceral reaction to it. I knew, I don't want to cross a finish line feeling that way. Obviously, people have different approaches to running and racing. Suddenly it seemed very okay with me that my pace is slow and I cross every single finish line with a smile on my face and a shaka! I had a sudden, bone deep certainty.

My most important criteria is that I have FUN doing my races and cross the line with a smile and a shaka. The End. :) I'm not going to concern myself ANY MORE about whether all my friends beat me. I'm going to judge every race on the fun factor, and the Atlanta Hot Chocolate Run course was very fun, and beautiful.

This is during the race...my smile is strained because I was in a little bit of pain at that point. But I like it anyway because I did muster a smile.

Now THIS is how I come into the finish line of a 15K race! SMILING!

Here's hubby's finish photo, they didn't get any mid-race pics of him. I get pics often because I watch for the camera and then turn my bib number to the front LOL Hubby's in the white shirt and he was pretty cheerful too!

You have some great muscle definition in your legs. Excellent photos. After my first couple of races, I figured out that I wanted to make sure I had a smile on my face, too. I am never going to finish at the top of anything. I'm in it for me and I'm not into punishing myself. (No 50 Shades of Grey for this girl!) I think you and I would do well in a 5K together.
