Weight Watchers and Family Dinners

I recently joined Weight Watchers and in a week and a half I've come to the realization that family dinners and late night eating are my diet pitfalls. I know majority of my calories/points are consumed at night and I know this is not a healthy eating habit. This is a challenge for me! Not everyone I live with is on diet or trying the healthy lifestyle. I have 27 points for the day and I normally leave about 14 points for evening eating. However when my mom makes homemade goulash, macaroni and cheese, and fried chicken for one dinner, its hard to stop at one helping and its hard to track all of that food! Majority of our dinners consist of homemade anything, its hard to track all the time, which is why I think its crucial for me to leave as many points for the night as I can!

Anybody have any strategies or suggestions on how to conquer this pitfall?

    Thanks for advice!!!! Going to try all of these options. Yesterday, I even asked my parents what was planned for dinner, so I plugged in single serving portions and planned my breakfast, lunch, and snack accordingly. Thanks for the support!

    I agree with Renmo99, using the recipe calculator is the best way to go about it. That way there is no guess work into the homemade food! Also I found when I am put in the situations where yummy homemade food is made like that I would get one of those vegetable steamer bags as a side for myself. Throw it in the microwave for a few minutes and I would make sure to fill atleast half my plate with the veggies! That way I am less inclined to go back for seconds or fill up solely on the "bad" foods.

    I've found planning ahead and using smaller plates has helped with homemade heavy point foods. emoticon

  Get the recipes for the food and enter them into the recipe calculator on SP, you can then take the nutritional info and use a Points Plus calculator to track or, if you have WeightWatchersOnline, you can use the recipe calculator on that site and figure out your points directly. Good luck!
