I'm still being very mindful of what I spend so that at the beginning of 2014 I can say I saved more money last year than the year before. Again, that's going to be a challenge for sure considering the state of the economy, the unwelcome breaking down of appliances, doctor bills, etc.
Our dishwasher recently started acting funky but my husband has it temporarily working which is a relief because sometimes we run it twice a day. We eat all our meals at home for the most part (unless we have an activity somewhere and then we still try to eat at home first or take a lunch with us).
He found a site online that was cheaper than another site he normally buys for to replace a few parts on the dishwasher and we're hopeful they will help. I really hate shelling out $500 or more for a new one right now as I have possible braces in the future waiting for my other child.
Let me tell you, braces are not cheap as I'm sure many of you know and having paid for my son's, I'm not looking forward to going down that route again, LOL.
We're an one-income family so I'm always looking for ways to cut the money I spend down on household items, so as I mentioned earlier, it's going to be a struggle this year but I'm going to give it my best shot.
My daughter and I went shopping yesterday (I had to get groceries) and found some great buys at our favorite dollar store (Mighty Dollar). It's different from Dollar Tree because they sometimes have items that would cost $10 in every other store for $1!
I went by Lowe's Foods (grocery store obviously) and bought only a few things, but got Go-Gurt yogurt (I buy the one without colors/HFC, etc. and got 2 boxes of that), soup (the expensive Campbell's Soup to Go, 2 pouches of that), whole grain Saltine's (2 boxes), and other things and paid only $1.75 thanks to coupons that were doubled and electronic coupons.
I looked at my receipt later when I got home and noticed they didn't double one coupon so it would have been only $1 had I caught it! A $1.75 well spent for our family!
Today I will be going to another grocery store that wasn't in the town we went to yesterday to get better deals than that but will get coupons from the paper first and have them ready to go before I do to save even more money. This is also a double coupon store so I expect to do well.
Friday I took the kids to a homeschool event I set up at the local bowling alley and we had a huge turnout which was great!
It was so nice to see every one after the Christmas holidays again and catch up with them. We were there for hours because it was unlimited bowling for $5 per person (including bowling shoe rental) until 5:00 so it was definitely a frugal activity with this unpredictable weather. The kids got some exercise and got to catch up with their friends, and the moms got to chat with each other.
I'm so thrilled that our homeschool group is thriving again after an ugly split and we have the best bunch of ladies ever in it. It's so nice to not walk on eggshells and worry that a few loose cannons will go off, LOL. Life is good!
