I started my new year with this Winter Challenge, and appreciate your leadership in the Daisies! Without the dedication of all you leaders, we wouldn't do nearly as well as we do! Thank you! emoticon

This is a really true and very interesting post, Leslie.

I heard about some research recently by Keith Chen, a behavioral economist at Yale, that might be relevant. Chen is studying the relationship between language and saving money. He's found that people who speak "futureless" languages (languages in which there is no real differentiation between verb tenses) are far more likely to save money than people who speak languages that differentiate past, present, and future. The same relationship holds for other behaviors like diet, exercise, and risky health behavior.

Chen believes the explanation is as follows: People whose language expresses a future tense can more likely postpone behavior that is related to future outcomes because our language "cleaves" future outcomes from present behavior; alternatively, people whose language does not differentiate verb tense both speak and live in the "now" and are therefore more likely to engage in "good behavior" in the "now." Fascinating!

So, anyway, although it is very, very true that a year from now, we'll all be happier if we start engaging in healthy behavior today (and stick with it), our language may discourage us from doing so. I'm thinking about this a lot and planning on reading Chen's research (I just saw his TED talk and his website) to see if I can figure out a way around this conundrum!
