shaking things up

one of the tips i read here on SP was the need to shake things up, to keep things fresh. especially when you are in maintenance - it would be so easy to slip back to old habits so perhaps it is even more important to replace with new ones. for some people shaking things up may involve joining a gym, or taking a different class. for others, trying something new like bicycling or swimming.

for me shaking things up has meant adding the fitibt to our lives - i love my electronics, and this one is so cute and little - and makes it so easy to do just a little bit more... when i first started using it, i checked it against my garmin, and found it was pretty accurate. and yesterday we managed 15,000 steps (6.5 mles) before lunch - and a second walk made it our first 25,000 step day - and over 10 miles! on a slow day (or busy day, with little time for walking), we still manage about 8000 steps.

it helps that we are living a lifestyle conducive to walking. we are on molokai, a sleepy hawaiian island, and most of the time don't have access to a car. so walking to the beach is a 5 miler round trip. adding anything to that - and there are the miles. and we live at the top of a hill right now, so any walk (or run, when we finally get back to running after the cold that gripped us before we left WA) ends with 20 or 30 flights of stairs, depending. we've already walked just a little bit more to round off the day at a nice round number.
