Walking after not being very active

Friday, January 18, 2013

So I did get Deacon today. We have had a very busy and full day. Now, keep in mind, I have fibromyalgia and neuropathy and I went to take our current dog to meet Deacon at the shelter. We walked a lot and let them run and get to know each other in a small dog park. They had a little tiff and were broken up. We were given the option to keep him or cancel the adoption. We took Buddy home and the family talked.

Then, we went back to the shelter and adopted Deacon. He came home and we took him for a walk. After lunch, we took him to Petco and met with my Deaf friend who will be helping me train Deacon. Between the treats he got from beginning some training, the treats from employees and then lunch, the poor guy upchucked on the floor of my car in the backseat.

Deacon tries to lie down quietly, but Buddy keeps getting into his face. Buddy is really playing the jealous fool. I took pity on Deacon and took him for another walk. (that makes 3 walks) He ate and then asked to go out, so I took him for yet another walk. By the time we got back, I had racked up 3 miles for the day after not getting any walking in. I am bushed and tired.

I know we have yet at least 1 more walk to go. I also have to work on the basic commands with training. He also needs to be reminded of total house breaking after spending 3 months at the kennel.

So for a pretty much non-exerciser, I have put in 3 miles of walking and I know I have more to go.

Way to go. That is a LOT of walking!

And yeah, kenneling for long periods does a job on dogs' house training. The shelter I volunteer for tries to get the dogs in homes ASAP, or fostered so they don't lose their home skills.
