Crunching Numbers, Upside Down

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Friday, January 18, 2013

I'm not much of a numbers cruncher; I tend to measure most of my progress in non-scale victories. But occasionally, I take a look at the numbers. For someone who lives in WonkaLand most of the time, it can be a firm reality check. But you know what? As black and white as those numbers are, sometimes I still need to interpret them from different angles, even upside down. It helps me keep things in a healthy perspective, and there's value to that. That's what I did on my walk this morning, so I thought I'd share it with you, in case it was relevant to anyone else. "Once more, unto the breach, dear friends!"

Shakespeare makes everything classy

Side note: several people have asked how I'm able to film myself while walking and doing stuff. Well, I used to just hold out my camera or phone at arm's length and hope for the best. But I got an iStabilizer monopod for Christmas, so that's what I've been using lately. It holds my phone or GoPro, has a telescoping handle and is really well-balanced. I'm still getting the hang of it. It's still pretty shaky, there's still an element of "hope for the best," but it's a pretty handy gadget to have. Now you know. Mystery solved.

I can even slip it onto a belt loop. Batman would use this monopod. Batpod!

Bonus side note: Speaking of gadgets and gear, I have to tell you about a recent temptation I had. Some of you know that I edit video for a living. From time to time, I use plugins, which are little effects or tools that supplement editing software. One of my suppliers came out with a new one, called Skin Smoother. It's basically photoshop for video. You can take out the wrinkles, age spots, blemishes; you know the drill. Initially, I thought, "Hmm, some of my clients might appreciate that." Then I thought about how easy it'd be to use that in my own vlogs here. I have quite a few laugh lines (one of the hazards of living in WonkaLand) and new age spots seem to pop up every few months. Did I mention, I film in HD? So yeah, everything pretty much shows. And I'm often outside, under harsh light, wearing workout clothes and minimal makeup, if any. Not exactly supermodel conditions. This plugin was tempting. Then, I shook myself awake and realized what a crazy idea that was. Please. The point of my vlog is sharing my journey--my real-life, middle-aged, suburban housewife, work-from-home mom journey. That one. So, as tempting as it was, I said "no" to the plugin. My clients will just have to be real too. Lol. Spark on, brave Sparkers!

PS: (slightly different than a side note) Did you notice my hair being kinda blue in this video? That's because it is, or was. I made Steampunk Goggles last night and got blue paint in my hair. Hey, these things happen. Anyway, it washed out, just in time for me to get a haircut and fresh, purple highlights this afternoon. WonkaLand, heh heh, it's a great place to live.

I do NOT wear Steampunk Goggles on my walks.

Thanks for putting into perspective the fact that we are not just continuing to lose weight, but at the same time dodging the old weight just waiting to hop back on!

Love the vlog. Love that you are "real" and not touched up. We are your friends and like you for who you are - you don't need makeup, you can wear what you want, and you can be out of breath! We just enjoy the peek into your life and your lovely neighborhood (and the swanky hat).

Are you feeling the love? emoticon

The average woman gains 10 pounds a year - so the way I look at it, if I didn't gain any weight in that year, that really means that I kept 10 pounds at bay! And, if I lost weight on top of not gaining that 10#, then super fantastic! It is a great perspective to have and really my mind works backward (family trait) so I totally get this.

RIP little melted snow deer.

I really want to do a vlog but I have an unsmart phone so....I guess I will try sometime to use my webcam? idk. Maybe I will just watch yours....they are entertaining. LOL.

I am all about looking at things from a different prospective. That is why I am still on Sparks and going semi strong. I will not give up no matter how little or how much I lose. I owe this to myself to be the person I know I can be and live that healthy life.

I love your goggles! Imagine the looks you would get if you did wear those on your walks!

Thank you for posting this. I was feeling the same way... What is there to blog about I have lost so little weight. But we do have the old pounds that we fight off and we have non scale victories and habits that are being formed.

You have done a great job on your journey and you look great. I love your attitude and your fun activities.

Great job!

Thanks for the inspiration. I, too, haven't been losing too much lately, but I do look back to see what I did do. And I have been keeping it off. My mindset has changed. I look at food and exercise differently. If I choose to eat something high in calories, or skip exercise to do something else, I now do it - making a decision. I don't let those things happen to me. I make it happen.

And thanks for updating us on the snowdeer. LOL.

    Girl,

13 pounds is awesome! You are losing it the safe way -- and the way that it WILL stay off. Little by little, we arrive!

You crack me up - quoting Shakespeare!

Oh, the poor snow deer. Gone, but not forgotten.

Blue hair, purple hair - it's all there is WonkaLand! Good for you for passing on the video erasing plug-in.

YES! Willy would be proud! You ARE "PURE Imagination!"

(KRISTIN my wizard marionette sings this song, when I perform with him! Gene Wilder gave me permission to use it, when he came to our theater, in 1974, as well as Cary Grant, Mel Brooks, Natile Wood, Robert Wagner, Angie Dickenson, Dyane Cannon, all in the same audience for Jennifer Grants B'Day. Jennifer came 3 years in a row! It was a fun party & the first show I produced & directed, on my own! I was young, but it was FUN!!!!!)

I have the pic of your snow deer as my computer screen saver. VERY cute!

I couldn't see the WINGS on your shoes. What are they like? Sounds like fun!

Your doing GREAT! Thanks for the support!

Slow and steady wins the race! I never thought of it that way, but you're right...not only do we have to move forward but we have to keep looking behind us to keep the weight we lost at bay.
Keep up the good work! emoticon

It's NOT just about the numbers, it's about all of it! For you, it wasn't "just" 13 pounds, it's really about 47 pounds AND the fact that you can carry on a conversation while walking AND you can hoop AND you are creative AND fun!! By the way, the goggles were neat!! I likey!

So A.) Your neighborhood is BEAUTIFUL! I wish I lived somewhere that nice! Unfortunately we seem to be becoming the shooting capitol this week (2 different shootings/3 people shot, 2 dead 1 critical) And that's all in the space of AN HOUR!

And B.) Not that you don't already know this, but you're totally awesome!
