Sending out Christmas cards this past year, I decided to go through an old address book and send cards to people of the "long time, no see" category. In order to locate some of these people, I resorted to checking through Facebook, 'net white pages, and plain old "googling". I "googled" this one particular couple only to find that my friend, Beth, had passed away around Easter.
She had been one of my best friends when we lived in Virginia. A very shy lady who collected dolls, walked her little dog every day, and doted on her husband and daughters. The last time we had spoken, around her b'day of 2011, she told me she had recently been diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2. When she passed she was just 54 yrs. old.
I have been kicking myself ever since. She had been such a good friend and I feel I let her down by letting our friendship lapse. I can make all the excuses I want, but I was never that busy and the distance never that great that I couldn't have kept in touch some way. Especially with technology the way it is.
Now I am on a quest. I have rekindled one old high school friendship this past week thanks to a mutual acquaintance on Facebook. We have made plans to get together the next time I am in my old hometown to swap memories, photos, and catch up after 40 yrs...which will be late Feb. And I have gone through old cards and photos and I'm on the track of an old friend from my college resident hall. These people had been very important to me at one time and I remember them often with great fondness.
I've heard the saying so many times that if you care about someone, tell them before it's too late. I hope Beth forgives me. In the meantime, I'm on a mission...one friend at a time.
And BTW...Sparkers...you mean a lot to me! Love and hugs!
