What have your BLC-Admin *DECIDED* to Just Do?!

Here we are, prepping for the FIRST BLC-WIDE WEEKEND CHALLENGE and it's a good one!! With the theme being JUST DO IT, we're ready to DECIDE to DO IT!!

As you know, one component is to DECIDE to just DO something. ANYTHING, this is a very personal choice. You're setting your OWN goal for what YOU know you need to do. Something that's holding you back. Something that you think you CANT do. Something you've been told you CANT do. Anything that you feel too old/heavy/silly/etc to do. Just Do It!!

We wanted to share with everyone what OUR personal DECIDE goals are for this weekend!

emoticon Terry (TEKRU1): "OK, the thing I've been struggling with for the last year, unsuccessfully, is giving up diet coke - my DECIDE is to go without one for at least one day!"
emoticon What do you think guys? I know she can do it, let's encourage her to go 1 day, and beyond! Tell her how you broke YOUR soda habit!

emoticon Nicole (FITLIKENIC): "My Decide : FIND a Walk friendly 1/2 Marathon and register for it! No more being worried I'll not be able to do it, or will run out of time."

emoticon Jen (JENS_DOIN_IT): "I am going to DECIDE to get up earlier! I talk about it, but I don't. STARTING NOW....I WILL DECIDE to get up earlier in the morning! I sleep BEST in the mornings...sleep horribly at night so 9am is my goal to get up for this challenge."
emoticonMaybe Jen would benefit from hearing some of your strategies for sleeping well and waking rested. Good luck Jen!

emoticon Mel (MGJARVI): "I just registered for the Flying Pig Marathon Relay. I haven't used a training plan or ran on the weekends since last September. I will decide on a plan to follow to train for the race *AND* I will actually run on the road (OUTSIDE) this weekend regardless of the stinking January weather!"
emoticonIf it's cold in Kentucky on Sunday, she may need a poke or two! Maybe we can follow up with her on Monday to see if she stuck to it!

    I have decided to get up on the weekends and do at least 15 min of exercising "before" drinking that first cup of coffee. I would rather sit there and drink 2 - 3 cups of coffee but i am going to change it up and see how my body responds to this.

    I have Decided to counteract negative self-talk. As soon as I catch myself, I imagine a big red stop sign and immediately give myself TWO positives about myself, out loud if possible. I have posted index cards with my many positive attributes around the house (bedroom, bathroom, computer, tv, car). It has worked for four days now, and I can already feel my self-esteem blossoming!

    Thanks for this post - very interesting! I got the garden cleaned up on the weekend, at least somewhat cleaned up. I am fairly interested in gardening, but I hate the cleanup and I have been avoiding doing so since last summer. I got the old tomato plants in the compost bin, and also the pampas grass blooms and trimmed them too. I am sooo ready for the spring bulbs to start appearing!

I am working on control of what I eat when. I have a tough time not eating the food at work, stress eating, overeating due to meds,. So I am making a Conscious effort to pay attention to what i eat. emoticon

Terry, while water is a great replacement, try water with some fruit in it. I love berries, lemon, lime, cucumber…. If you put it in the fridge overnight in a sealed jar – it is so refreshing! Good luck on that goal!

Nicole, there is so many great marathons now locally - I am sure you will find one that meets your criteria – and you will rock it.

Jen, I just found a great app called sleep cycle – it actually monitors your sleep and wakes you up based on your sleep pattern within the half hour of your alarm time. I have only tried it for a few days so far – but seems promising.

Mel, flying pig sounds great – training plan is crucial now that you are registered. Hope you managed your training run today!

You all do an awesome job with this BLC challenge - thanks so much!

I am focusing on eating at the low end of my range and working out 5/7 times a week. That is what worked last BLC so I am sticking to that plan again!

Terry, focus on water while giving up pop. I know it's not the same, but you can try flavored water too....take it one day at a time, but don't give yourself a 'reward' to have one if you made it one day. You can do it.

Nicole, you can do it. I know you can because you won't EVER give up and that my friend is just a matter of signing up for it. You've got this!

Jen, UGH, getting up early?! No fun! hahaha But try sitting up to turn off the alarm, or put the alarm across the room (and don't run back to bed after you turn it off, haha) That way you are out of bed and might as well be up and at 'em.

Mel, Flying Pig Marathon? Oh now that's awesome, GREAT NAME!!!! Think of it this way, even if January weather doesn't play nice, you can do this, and you won't be so hot when you are done if it's cold ;) ha! You can do this! When's the Marathon?

    Jen-I am struggling with getting up earlier as well, but like others, the problem starts with staying up too late. So, I am working on getting to bed before 10. Then I will be able to get up before 6:30 to exercise.

I never had a problem with Diet Coke (or diet anything drink) since I am sensitive to artificial sweeteners. My sister and I get "foggy brained" using them.

Terry--I replaced Diet Coke -- my staple -- with any other beverage a couple of years ago. Water, Fruit flavored water, tea, etc. I didn't try to avoid artificial sweetners entirely -- just soda - diet or otherwise. After about two months, I tried one, and found I could not abide the taste of it -- I had really become sensitized to the artificial flavor of it -- and have been happily Diet Coke (and for that matter any other soda drink) ever since (about three years). I can't say that it impacted my weight one way or the other, but I did start drinking more water as a result -- and I am guessing polluting my body just a little less with chemicals.

I went to an expo (to get my book signed by Jillian Michaels not to listen to the sleep expert! lol) a few years ago and they had a sleep expert there. He said that going to sleep at about the same time each night is one of the first tasks he gives his patients. He said that going to bed at different times upsets the circadian rhythm and makes it hard to get a sound sleep.

    Great goals for everyone!

Another team I'm on is going to do a no-sugar/so sweeteners challenge for February. I'm going to get an early jump on this and try to go the entire weekend with neither one of them. I'm including Monday as it's a holiday.

    Most of you will not understand this one, but this weekend I will clean out 2 chicken/turkey houses. They are starting to lay now and need clean houses and new straw in their boxes.....I will do it Saturday and Sunday!!!

    Terry -In BLC 20, Azure had a clean eating challenge for the month of November. I do like to take up a challenge. November was the month I gave up Diet Coke, and I continued to this day. Crystal Light has some naturally sweetened flavors. Look in the tea isle and there are some naturally sweetened teas also. Don't purchase the artificially sweetened kind or you really won't be making positive progress away from artificially sweetened drinks.

    Well, I've read all of the responses and I can't run--bad knees
I already have great sleep patterns--8 hrs a night usually
Haven't had soda for YEARS and it was hard to break the habit.

BUT - I decided to MAKE myself conquer this food tracker thing that has me buffaloed. I've been working with it for several days and still wrestle with it
BUT
I WILL "JUST DO IT" THIS WEEKEND !!!

You ADMIN ladies have inspired me---if you can RUN, STOP COKE, and GET UP EARLIER, then surely I can master this tracker monster. I've never ever no never tracked before--in fact I really dislike ( can I say hate) tracking, but decided to "just do it" for this round cuz I have set an impossible goal for myself and maybe it will help.

  Terry, I decided a few days ago, before the challenge, that I was going to give up the diet Coke too. My goal is to drink the last 2 sodas tonight.. lol. But, I have enough water on hand for tomorrow, and some Chrystal light iced tea mix, just in case I need flavor to that water... Good luck to you!

    Terry ~ No advice here on the diet coke habit. Thankfully it's never been my vice.

Jen ~ I suffered the same issue so I started - January 1st - going to bed between 9 and 10PM and reading til I'm sleepy. I'm happy to say, I'm now getting up, well rested, between 6 and 7 AM. Problem solved.

Nic - dear sweet Nic - why not join Mel and I and the rest of the gang for Flying Pig? emoticon You'll have plenty of SPark support!! The miles will fly by! (Get it? Flying Pig!!)

I'd already decided that emoticon was my big problem to tackle, though in the opposite direction from JEN. I keep staying up later, then "catching up" on the weekends. I've tried to set sleep rules for myself in the past and tend to rebel, so I've decided that enough is enough and I am changing this for the better.

I wrote out some specific rules for myself (bedtime, wake time weekday and weekend, and even specific allowed exceptions).

    Yay Admin Ladies! You all ROCK! I can't wait to see how well you all do with this challenge!

Terry, when I decided to kick my diet soda habit, I knew I would need to substitute something else (aside from water) or I wouldn't be able to do it. I found that in the winter, green tea made a great substitution for me. Plus, it gave me the excuse to use the fun mugs my kids gave me. I still have a diet soda from time to time, but before I allow myself to have one, I make myself drink 16 ounces of water. Usually, by the time I finish that, I don't want one anymore, but if I do, then I let myself have it.

Jen, hmm, sleep, huh? I'm sure you've probably seen the suggestion to power off at least an hour before bedtime. For me, an hour wasn't enough--especially when I was an admin because my brain would start going overtime and I'd have a hard time falling asleep. I had to start shutting down 2 hours before bed time in order to have that quiet mind.

Nicole, oh my gosh, girlie! I cannot WAIT to hear which HM you decide to do! That is SO stinking exciting! WHOOT! WHOOT!

Mel, my dear...ahhh, I feel for ya. I did my long, slow run today and it was 35 when I started. You know what might help? Download some songs from IronMan so that when they come on as you're running, you're warmed up with thoughts of RDJ. ;) You know that GOYBAD that I love so much featuring George, right? Well, I've got that song as my first one on every running playlist I have and it heats me right up! LOL! I'll be looking to see that you did your run!

Keep up the awesome job, ladies! You are AMAZING!

Terry - As for the emoticon , I used to drink coke like it was going out of style!!! I stopped drinking it cold turkey and strated to drink flavored sparkling water, that was the ice breaker for me! I still got the fiiiiiz without the sugar and empty calories and it helped with my water intake!

Jen!! I challenge you! emoticon I need to start waking up earlier too - would make my mornings so much less stressful! Let's DO THIS! emoticon

Jen -- you might try a different sort of alarm to get up to ... I found an iPhone app (maybe available for Android too?) called "Radio Alarm" and I love it! You can choose a whole variety of different sounds to wake up to, including a trumpet! Who knows? Maybe just knowing you're going to hear something different in the a.m. will help your mind wake up.

    I've decided to kick my "I should" attitude to the curb and change it to "I AM!" I tend to say "I should get my workout done, I should get a walk in, I should get dinner started, I should get to the store" and then end up putting it off. I am going to pre-set the daily schedule and DO IT! Told DH to make me aware of anytime he hears me say I SHOULD!

Terry~I personally know how hard it is to give up soda. The best way to do it is go cold turkey. There will be a day where you think your head will explode because of the caffeine withdrawal but it is all worth it in the end.

Nikki~You got this. I know you can do it!!!

Jen~set two alarms to wake up early. There have been times I have three alarms going to I can get up

Mel~Get out your training schedule and ROCK ON!

    I decided to clean off a chair....doesn't sound like much, but it is a chair I use for exercising. It's been covered with papers etc for a while. So, I did it this morning.

Terry, I used to be addicted to Dr. Pepper. I rarely drank water, even for taking pills. i decided I wanted a good mammo, Dr. Pepper and chocolate has caffeine so I decided to give up all caffeine...longest year of my life!! But I did have a good mammo plus, it broke my addiction to Dr. P.
Tip: if you do decided to give up your diet soda .... don't go cold turkey emoticon migraine city.

Mel & Nic, just do it. No matter how far you make it, you at least tried and tyhat is the important part and it'll e easier for the net event. Mel, you'll warm up in time after a few mins of running.

Jen, sorry, wish I could help, but I'm the worse sleeper. Go to bed late and up early. Only reason to get up early....feed the squirrels and birds. They now expect it and I can hear them run across the roof to the front yard tree. Oh well, what can I say.

Suggestion for ADMIN....Since Ohio is SORT of central and since I know that Jen is wanting to do a emoticon with Nic and since Mel is signed up (for the relay?)....why not decide on making the Flying Pig your emoticon ? You would have LOTS of support because it's a HUGE sparker event. You can turn it into a SPARKaliciously FUNtastic memory making event!

Mel, put on those kicks emoticon and print off your training program and JUST DO IT! Who are you doing the relay with? Hook up and make it a weekend date. Most training plans will have weekday training and one long training day on the weekends as a "group". You've got this!

Jen, 0900 is your goal for a wakeup? Plan a "date" for 1000 with Jeff to meet for a workout if he can or a fitclub workout with the boys at 1000. Then you have something you HAVE to do then!

Terry, if you're going to be walking a emoticon and are in training, you def need to kick that habit! Maybe you need to invest in a sodastream to help you wean yourself.

My DECIDE is as yet undecided......

    I'm going to buy new trainers this weekend. Been putting it off for ages and I really need them now, especially for all the walking I'll be doing over the next 12 weeks.

If I could find a walk friendly half marathon like Nocole perhaps I'd walk even more. Maybe I should try harder to find one. I'll ask some UK spark walker teams if they have any tips.

Jen - I love getting up at 6.30 am every day including days off! But I used to hate getting up early and would certainly never have dreamt of getting up at that time. My advice to you is - just do it! - ! - and I'm sure if you do, you will find it easier and even enjoyable as you stick with the habit, and hopefully will even sleep better because of it.
