Atkins Update from 1/11/2013

Thursday, January 17, 2013

I am still treking on with Atkins and I am seriously sorry that I listened to all the naysayers for so long. I have lost 25 pounds and am down 2.5 sizes since August and it feels like it has been sooo easy. My body feels much better, my workouts are easier and my acne has lessened. And my eating disorder (bulimic/binge eater for 15 years) is very much under control. A few urges and slip-ups here. I still go to therapy but ultimately, I think carbs have a lot to do with my disordered eating habits.

Today I rewarded myself with my first Starbucks flavored drink - a tall Americano with a splash of sugar free vanilla syrup and a splash of whipping cream. I felt a little silly ordering it, but hey, I've seen people order their coffee at specific temperatures.

Caveats -

I did have a bit of a stall that discouraged me. I was stuck fluctuating between 2-3 pounds for well over a month. I was working my way up OWL and got a bit out of control with sugar free candies and bars. I also was eating more whole fat plain yogurt and no sugar peanut butter than was wise. I gave myself a one week break from the diet to remind myself what I was missing - and I was surprised that my favorite pizza and chocolate babka and whole wheat challah bread did not bring me the joy I once remembered. After a week, I jumped back on the diet with no qualms, cutting out the sugar alcohols (except for today's Starbucks, obviously) and the yogurt and pb. Down 5 pounds in 3 weeks. Saving to buy clothes a size smaller and getting laughed at by colleagues for my baggy work pants.

I am losing hair. Yes, this is frightening. I am blessed with a full head of fine hair, and it is falling out. Not so that it is noticeable to others, but it is all over my floors and jackets. Apparently, this is a side effect of weight loss, but not one I've heard much about. Diets are stressful on our bodies, and Atkins is reportedly slightly more stressful than other diets, and that apparently triggers hair to go into its final phase. It will grow back and my stylist reports that my hair is healthy.
