She loves me more than a warm coat

Thursday, January 17, 2013

That is what my daughter said to me when she learned one of her friends was coming over for a play date. I had to laugh, my daughter loves to be warm so I know that was a heartfelt statement, but how funny!

As I reflect on my much loved daughters, it strikes me how I need to emmulate the youngest one more. Don't get me wrong, the older one is a sweetheart too, but the youngest is still unspoiled and states what is on her mind. If you are a mother or father of children, with at least one with a few years of schooling and one without much or any schooling, you probably know what I mean.

The youngest one shows a lot of healthy traits that I should be exhibiting, but stopped long ago. She eats a small meal or snack every couple of hours and rarely a big meal. Fruit is her 'sports candy', via the tv show LazyTown. She will watch some tv for about 15-25 minutes, but then she wants to do something. She loves to go outside and play. She loves to dance to music. She loves to go for a walk or ride her bicycle. She is often on the go and doesn't like to just sit and relax until the evening. She drinks plenty of water throughout the day.

Not surprisingly, she is the only one in her correct weight range for her size. Does she eat everything healthy? No, but her calories in are far outweighed by her calories out. And little by little, she is eating healthier as she learns to try different foods and enjoys them. So I'm going to work on following her lead. I hope my little one stays unspoiled forever, because it makes my day to be told I am loved more that a warm coat!

If we took cues from toddlers, then we'd probably all be healthier. They stop eating when they're full, actually feel full at appropriate times and run everywhere!

Don't you wish being an adult could be as simple as when we were kids? Playing outside with our friends, playing ball or riding our bikes until the street lights came on. It's sad that these days its really not even safe to allow our children to be away from eyesight. They will never know how much fun being a kid should be. They also don't get recess anymore. And many schools are limiting or eliminating extra curricular sports activities. And they are also cutting back on PE.
