Steel Cut Oatmeal with Strawberries and Blackberries



Oatmeal, Steel Cut (Specialty's), 1 cup - 150 cal
Blackberries, fresh, 1 cup - 75 cal
Strawberries, fresh, 0.5 cup, sliced - 25 cal
TOTAL: 250 calories

I love berries mixed in with oatmeal. It's pretty filling, loads of fiber, and tasty too. Blackberries are hard to find this time of year, but Costco always seems to have them at a great price.


Fun Facts:

*Strawberries are vital for super skin! They contain vitamin C, which helps keep skin firm and smooth. Strawberries also contain Vitamin A, which is vital to healthy hair and skin.

*Blackberries and strawberries are very high in ellagic acid which is an antioxidant that acts as a scavenger to help make potential cancer-causing chemicals inactive. Ellagic Acid reduces the genetic damage caused by carcinogens like tobacco smoke and air pollution. They also contain other antioxidants that help lower cholesterol and ward off cardiovascular disease.

*Strawberries for headaches??? They contain natural salicylates, an ingredient that's found in aspirin! In Roman times, the strawberry was valued for its therapeutic properties.

*Blackberries are very high in Vitamin C and fiber!

*Have you ever eaten a double strawberry? Legend holds that if you break it in half and share it with a member of the opposite sex, you will soon fall in love with each other.

*Strawberries were used as a medicinal herb in the 13th Century in Rome.

*Strawberries have a museum dedicated to them in Belgium!

*Strawberries are a member of the rose family.

*Strawberries are the National Symbol of the Zeta Tau Alpha women's fraternity. Legend has it that a secret admirer sent them to one of their founding members, so one of their first socials was a strawberry social!!

Think about a metal saw rusting due to oxidation, the body deteriorates due to the effects of oxidation.

*The second wife of Henry VIII, Queen Anne Boleyn (1507-36), had a strawberry-shaped birthmark on her neck. Unfortunately, some claimed this proved she was a witch.

    Really good in Smothies too - Steal Cut Oatmeal ? Have to research have heard a ton good thing in regards to this Oatmeal - What is the difference between steal cut and conventional ? Hugs K

    And I just read a research article indicating women who ate berries 2-3 x's weekly were 1/3rd less likely to have a cardiac event than those who didn't. Even if those who didn't eat berries ate other fruits and vegetables in appropriate amounts, it didn't compare with the berry eating group. Hooray for my favorites: raspberries and blackberries!

    emoticon I LOVE Strawberrys!! And I almost always put Blueberries in my Oatmeal.
From reading these Facts, I may have to give Blackberries another try. Not even on the list of Top Ten Favorite Berrys!
