Like putting together a puzzle

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Last night, when I was getting my breakfast and lunch ready for today, I realized how I treat my meal/calorie planning like a puzzle. If I have 400 of calories to "spend" on breakfast, and I use up 140 of those with my chocoyogurt, that leaves 260. So if I have an English muffin with a 1/2 TB of almond butter, that's another 160, so that leaves 100 I can use for an apple - perfect!!

I have a mental list of how many calories are in most of my regular selections, and then I just have to mix and match. Like on days I eat oatmeal, which is a bit higher in calories than my muffin&almond butter choice, I may have to have only half an apple, or a couple of cuties. If I want Ezekiel toast, I need to skip the almond butter - it's all a matter of balancing out the numbers.

When I'm in the meal-planning groove, which is most of the time, that puzzle-working and number-crunching really help make the process an interesting challenge, not a chore. I'm grateful that fits into my personality naturally and doesn't require a huge effort!

Great positive perspective on meal planning! It is nice to be able to plug different foods you already know the calorie count on into your meals. Options are good!

I do the same thing with meal planning and puzzling. Tracking my food here really helps. I plug in breakfast, and then planned dinner, and then divide out the rest of my calories between snacks and lunch. So I guess it works for my personality as well!

I need to give almond butter a try. I love almonds.

Hope you're having a great day!
