Like putting together a puzzle

Last night, when I was getting my breakfast and lunch ready for today, I realized how I treat my meal/calorie planning like a puzzle. If I have 400 of calories to "spend" on breakfast, and I use up 140 of those with my chocoyogurt, that leaves 260. So if I have an English muffin with a 1/2 TB of almond butter, that's another 160, so that leaves 100 I can use for an apple - perfect!!
I have a mental list of how many calories are in most of my regular selections, and then I just have to mix and match. Like on days I eat oatmeal, which is a bit higher in calories than my muffin&almond butter choice, I may have to have only half an apple, or a couple of cuties. If I want Ezekiel toast, I need to skip the almond butter - it's all a matter of balancing out the numbers.
When I'm in the meal-planning groove, which is most of the time, that puzzle-working and number-crunching really help make the process an interesting challenge, not a chore. I'm grateful that fits into my personality naturally and doesn't require a huge effort!
