Being demeaned will not make me work harder!

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Why do some bosses think that they can speak to their employees anyway they like? My principal started off todays faculty meeting angry. He let all of us know that we aren't doing enough and we all suck at our jobs. Okay, so I'm paraphrasing.....a little.

What he didn't recognize or acknowledge is that for the last 2 1/2 years the majority of the teachers have worked a ridiculous amount of (unpaid) overtime to improve our school grade. The problem is, our school's student population is largely transitory (and below the poverty line) so the class I start the year with, is not the class I end the year with. That plays hell when school grades are based on standardized test scores. Of course, the county/state doesn't recognize that. Nope, they just blame the teacher.

All today's meeting did is make me want to leave this school even more than I did before the meeting. It also keeps me committed to my current weight loss/life goals! I want to move to a new school as a whole new person (physically).

I am so sorry that you felt unappreciated. I am a teacher and know how hard it is to get all students to achieve. It is not fair that we are blamed for things that need to be reinforced at the home. It is our responsibility to do ensure that we give each student an equitable education.
I feel so blessed to have administration that supports us 100% of the time. If i need something, they are always willing to lend a hand or provide what I need.
I pray that this coming year will be different for you. I pray that your principal would be more sympathetic to the hundreds of jobs you willingly do for the betterment of the children.
The school is more than a score. It is an extended family. May your extended family grow together as a team to promote a healthier environment for everyone.

I feel your pain. There was an editorial piece in yesterday's paper that said to get kids to learn more, get rid of the bad teachers. Really? The children in my classroom are not progressing because their parents can't/won't support their homework assignments. Really? Parents can't get their children to read 20 minutes a day???

I, too, am sick of teachers being blamed and then being expected to fix this mess.

But, enough of my rant. Your principal is an idiot and not worthy of his staff. Keep Sparking the healthy lifestyle and you'll get to where you want to be. Hang in there. I'm right there with you!
