Building a Morning Routine
Tuesday, January 15, 2013
When I was little, I was most likely to be in the most trouble in the morning. My mom would wake me up over and over again, only to check 5 minutes later and find me asleep again. Often times this wasn't a conscious decision on my part, and when I did wake up it was to find my mom standing over me in the midst of raging over my inability to get up. I would stumble out of bed, grab whatever clothes were handy and stumble to the kitchen where I would begin getting breakfast ready for my siblings.
Once I was introduced to caffeine I was able to wring a little more out of my mornings, but still I've struggled with getting up in the morning. In college I would go to my 8am Chemistry Labs still wearing my pajamas, as I wouldn't get up until about 5 minutes before class. I've almost lost jobs where I was required to be in early. When I became a manager for the gas station chain I worked for for almost 5 years, I was supposed to be to work at 5am, after having driven across town to gather competitor gas pricing. I was on attendance probation multiple time.
My job now is more reasonably scheduled and I work from 9:30-6:30 most days. Since I've started SparkPeople I've been working harder on building morning time. In my house I'm the only person awake, so it's great quite me-time, but I have to work hard to enjoy it. I've been trying to concentrate on getting to bed early, which is hard some days because the only time I get to spend with my boyfriend during the weekday is in the evenings and he's often up long after I should have gone to bed.
Ideally my morning routine would look something like this:
Walk the dog for 20 minutes.
Workout for at least 30 minutes.
Get ready for work and spend a few minutes journaling.
Be on the road by 9.
I think to do all of that I'll need to work on adding it in, one piece at a time and keep getting up 15 minutes earlier until I'm consistently getting up at 6:30 to get it all done.
How do you wake up in the morning? Do you have a routine?
