Hard Freeze, Day 4

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

We watered, covered and pulled potted plants and trees under our porch to no avail. The low teen temperatures at night killed all of our tomato plants; even the yellow plum. The eggplant looks very woebegone but may have life in the roots. All of our pepper plants bit the dust. The fruit trees really took a beating.

Just before the hard freeze was to take place, I went out and picked the last of the tomatoes. A hand full of yellow, one beautiful beefsteak (the only one we ever got) and 4 plum tomatoes are just starting to ripen on my window sill.

Day time temperatures are supposed to go back up to the upper 60's and low 70's later this week. I am going to give my plants time to see if they come back before I give up totally on them.

The seed catalogs have all arrived and am intrigued with the corn that grows in containers. Might just have to give it a shot. Come on springtime!

My garden has been blighted, too. It's depressing to a point.

Please let me know how you like the corn that grows in containers if you try it! Saw it in my seed catalogs, too, but haven't been keeping my catalogs - my seed collection is.... Daunting... and doesn't need to grow... LOL
