Yesterday was crazy, but in the best way. The students are back, the hallways are filled and the cafeteria is open. But it is the cafeteria I am most worried about, and making time for healthy choices during the day.
Let's start with the cafeteria. First, it isn't filled with the healthiest of foods. I have a weakness for the cookies, and for the grilled cheese sandwiches, as well as many of their deep fried selections. But I can't avoid the cafeteria, first because it is directly outside my office, and second, because it is the source of free ice and water during the day, which I hugely depend on. So yesterday I focused on what I've been doing good. Since December 30, 2012, I haven't had any caffeine, chocolate, deep fried foods, sweets or soda. I just kept repeating those accomplishments to myself as I would walk through the cafeteria yesterday. And I'll do it more today, until it becomes habit to leave without anything but water. At the same time, last night I remembered that they do sell salads, so I packed some of my own dressing to keep in my office fridge. This means if I can't pack a lunch, at least I have another alternative. I also brought a couple cans of soup to work today to make for lunch, and supper if I stay late to do homework or the gym.
This brings me to the struggle to find time to eat during the day. I teach a math class four days a week, during the day, which is technically my "lunch hour" so if I want to eat, I have to fit it in right before or after class. I try to stick to this as much as possible so I am not giving my colleagues more work so I can teach and get paid for it. I'm excited to see today how I like soup during the day, and since I am a crazy picky eater, hopefully I'll like one of the soups I brought with me today.
Now that the semester has begun, I'm just trying not to be overwhelmed. If I am not busy, I tend to eat and be lazy. So I am taking a class and teaching (to make some extra money), but I have to keep making room for the gym and healthy eating. It feels like my blogs are often repeating the same themes...I'm sure once I get some of these habits down a little better, I will start to think about new things, right? :)
To finish on a happy note, this is the longest I've consistently used Sparkpeople before. :) A little celebration to start my day!
Have a great Tuesday everyone!
