I have to put in a good word for calorie trackers. I know they can be expensive, but I feel that they are really helpful.
In a nutshell, SparkPeople estimates my base calorie burn for the day between 1300 and 1600 calories for my 5' 0" 110 pound frame. In reality, I very rarely burn a number that low--only if I'm traveling in the car all day or sick. According to Bodybugg (and a similar tracker I had before that) I generally burn between 1700 and 1800 calories per day (not including a workout) or 2100-2200 calories per day if I'm cleaning the house (not including extra workouts). I feel very confident in these higher numbers because it is consistent with what I see on the scale. If I ever drop down to 1600 calories now I get pretty regular headaches.
If I could make a wish, I would figure out a way to set up people just starting a new fitness routine with a calorie counter for a couple of months. I think knowing a base number for what I burn is so essential to my healthy lifestyle goals.
