Me vs. The Golden Globes

Monday, January 14, 2013

We're huge TV and Film lovers. In our house, awards shows always mean a big hearty dinner followed by hours of endless/mindless/effortless snacking. I'm talking bags of chips, nachos, ice-cream, sweets, the works. I was concerned that this year the Golden Globes were going to ruin all the hard work I've done over the last 2 weeks. In the past, I've eaten super-light on awards days so that I can pretend that the thousands of calories I consume while watching the show don't count as much (but, they do). But, I know that's not healthy. No matter what I eat, I know that I am going to want to snack.

So, for dinner last night I doubled up on my salad instead of a second helping of pasta and drank twice as much water - and that part was pretty easy. But as the red-carpet started to come to a close, the cravings for junk-food kicked in...

My spouse chose Ketchup Chips and Australian Soft Licorice (yum) and chocolate. I armed my side of the couch with popcorn (with home-made "dill pickle" topping) and celery with hummus and an ice-cold fruit cup. In all honesty, I was about 90% sure I was going to blow through my popcorn, skip the celery and reach across the coffee table for the chips in desperation... BUT, I didn't even finish my popcorn... I had 2 stalks of celery and... amazingly... I was done.

I guess it went really smoothly because I had planned "sensible" snacks ahead of time and didn't starve myself all day. And with this being the beginning of awards season, I now know I can do it. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless.
emoticon Looking forward to finding new recipes for more healthy snack foods...
