Need Vegetarian Help SOS!

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Anyone who reads my blogs know I have intestinal cancer recently I found out I have celiac disease so I must say good bye to gluten food. I have decided to become vegetarian for the purpose of getting the most benefits out of plant based foods but I really need help.

I have been trying to use the nutritional tracker and put together meals that fit each category calorie, carbohydrate, protein, and fat plus I need the high fiber for the cancer. If this was a check book I would be rubber and all over the place. One question I have if I can get my allowance of calories in the range I need them but I go over on complex carbohydrates is that really bad seeing how it is plant based and not processed? Anybody know? I guess that is my major question.

    Hi ,
I would have to agree with Vapidwench's comment. Get some good solid medical advice on becoming vegetarian , perhaps a dietitian could help out with this too? Someday's I eat only vegetarian meals; meatless days, just because I want to . There is also a vegetarian team here as well; but I would definitely opt in for professional help to make sure you are getting what you need everyday.
I hope all works out for you !!

    Hi,

I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles.

Before I try and give some advice I'd just like to add a disclaimer - I'm just a vegetarian, no dietician. That said, here are my views: complex carbs, as I'm sure you know, are much better for you than just simple/processed carbs. In fact they're the best source of fuel for the body's energy production, and it sounds like you're going to need that extra energy. So I can't imagine that they're going to be the worst thing in the world.

However, it can be quite challenging to get enough protein or put a healthy limit the amount of carbs your taking in when you're just eating plants; great protein sources are nuts, seeds, legumes, tofu - and maybe they're something to look at if you're consistently going way over on complex carbs. I know they sound really boring, especially tofu which has a bad reputation, but there are great recipes out there.

Definitely try and get some medical advice from professionals, because as I said I'm just a plain ol' vegetarian, but if you need any recipe inspiration just give a shout.

I wish you all the very best, keep fighting!
