Ordinary Bravery

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Today, as I watched over 200 people run or walk anywhere from 1 mile to a 10K, I was struck by how much your size doesn't have to limit your capabilities. I saw people that I would say are at a healthy weight struggling to run the 5K, and I saw people who had considerable weight to lose plugging away at the 10K. I was impressed with the everyday courage of these people who were putting it out there and running in honor of a good woman who probably won't be around to see the 2nd anniversary of this race. I felt proud to be a member of the human race watching all of those people running. Each person was doing their best. Some of them were sweaty and red faced and not all that pretty to watch run, but all I could think of when I saw them was how proud I was of what they were doing. It was incredibly encouraging. Next year, they're going to have to find someone else to help direct traffic, because I'll be joining these brave people and taking it one step at a time.

It's really awesome to watch people walk/run. It's even more awesome to be one of them. You see how beautiful the human race is.
