Inquiring Minds: Silly Running Questions

Friday, January 11, 2013

Ok, so you know how some things you just can't find on Google but you still want to know the answer to? Well I'm going to post a few questions...in all my embarrassing glory...in hopes that someone can help me answer them!

1) How do you protect your phone/ipod/gps watch while running in the rain? Do you just go without?

2) What do you do when you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of a run...a long run at that lol? I know this is TMI but I'm not just talking #1 here...and yes I'm turning red while typing this!

3) Do you carry water with you on long runs?

4) What do you consider the most important items to take with you on a run?

5) What type of headphones do you use and would you recommend them?

Ok...well I guess the first two were my real questions but the other three I'm just really curious because I know everyone likes to run differently and I'm really trying to figure out what works best for me.

    1) How do you protect your phone/ipod/gps watch while running in the rain? Do you just go without?

Snack size baggies. You can zip them closed with just enough gap for the headphones to come out.

2) What do you do when you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of a run...a long run at that lol? I know this is TMI but I'm not just talking #1 here...and yes I'm turning red while typing this!

If you're in the city, convenience stores are usually fine with it. Just say that you come there often so they know you're a customer in the neighborhood. Churches are open a lot of the time too. I've gone into one before.

3) Do you carry water with you on long runs?

No. I hydrate extra when I get back (not too much before though or I get side aches).. If you really wanted to I'd get a camelback to keep your hands free and no bulky bottles.

4) What do you consider the most important items to take with you on a run?

If it's in the rain, a rain coat. Otherwise i'd say my ipod. Can measure steps or a run and listen to music. One of my ipods has books on tape on it. Makes the run fly by because i get so involved in the story.

5) What type of headphones do you use and would you recommend them?

Not sure of the brand, but definitely the kind you stick in your ears so they stay put.

I LOVE running in the rain.

#1 - I have an ipod suffle, so I just clip my under my shirt/jacket to keep it from getting wet. As for my phone...I either put it in my camelback or my pocket in a ziplock bag.

#2 - No need to be embarassed to ask this, because...well it happens to alot of runners. It's happened to me way to many times while out on both short & long runs. So I've learned to always carry alittle TP in a ziplock bag just in case I have to jump in the bushes. And trust me..that has happened more than a few times. I've also sprinted to gas stations & other places that have toliets. So knowing where some are located is a good idea.

#3 - I always carry my camelback on me, weither it's a short run or a long run. You just never know what's ahead. It may get hotter out, you may need more hydration that day, you may be out longer than antisapatade. My feelings are it's better to be too prepared with water, than not prepared at all.

#4 - My camelback, phone (for emergencies), TP, gels (for longer runs), my garmin & music. And if I'm running somewhere new/beautiful...my camera.

#5 - I just use the earbuds that came with my ipod.

    1) I'm on my second ifitness armband. I lost my first one & couldn't replace it fast enough. It's water-resistant & I've used it in downpours on 4 hr runs with NO problems. http://www.ifitnessinc.com/phone-ip
od-window-armband.html

2) I try to run on bike trails or parks or in my neighborhood so if this happens I know where a potty is. I have had to make a mad dash for the bushes a couple of times. Its embarrassing, but Pooh happens as they say! hahaha!!

3) I carry water on any run that will last longer than 60 mins. I have a belt that holds 4 8oz bottles, its great

4) water or fuel on long runs, phone - always!!, id and pepper spray - my hubby won't let me go without it.

5) ipod earphones won't stay in my ears, in-ears buds like skull candy works best, but I get cheap ones :)

Enjoy your runs!!

Not one of your questions, but ID is very important if something goes wrong. www.roadid.com has great products--more expensive than a luggage tag but more durable and more confortable.

    Hmm, let's see...

I LOVE running in the rain...
#1 - I fit my phone/iPod either stuffed in between my sports bra/outer shirt with bra shelf. Or in pockets depending on what I'm wearing. Or keep it balled up in my fist as well as I can. (Though I see plenty of hikers/joggers with fanny packs/belts)

#2 - I've never needed to go #2 (and I'm laughing that #2 is about #2). I did start my period on a hike and just clenched as best I could, LoL. I wasn't gonna miss out on a good workout to go back to my car for a tampon and try to find a bathroom.

#3 - On long runs, or runs I'm unsure of, I carry water. But if I know the trail, I go without and rehydrate when I get to my starting/ending destination.

#4 - On my runs, besides my workout gear, naturally, I have my iPod - I need the music. My car/house keys. My phone - for safety/emergency and for my endomondo app.

#5 - Headphones. I have two different pairs - one is a pair of ear buds and the other wraps around my ear. It depends on the weather. If I know I'll be sweating throughout, I go with the earbuds so I can remove them quickly if I'm getting damp. But I like the wraparounds because they don't move or fall out.

I used to be a runner, then I got hurt. I knew where the parks were with bathrooms or arrianged with friends to be able to use their restroom. I also used them as watering holes. (I would buy and drop off a 24 pack of water and grab it off of their porch. I was running in the country so I didn't use an ipod typically for safety reasons. I always made sure I had some form of ID. I took an old luggage tag and sewed it into my running shorts, plus $5.

I'm not a runner but a friend of mine is and I've asked her a few of these questions. Yes, I'm curious, too.

1) She doesn't run in the rain.
2) Know where the bathrooms are located. She said some really dedicated runners will just go off the side of the road behind a tree or a bush. The women do the same!
3) She does carry a small snack with her on a long run (8 miles). I didn't know what product she was talking about but its a gel kind of snack. I don't know about a water bottle though.
4) she takes an ipod with her to listen to music. I believe she uses wireless earphones. Whatever they are, and I do believe they're wireless, they are more expensive, but she wouldn't be without them.

When runners are in 1/2 & full marathons, at least out here, bystanders will bring snacks for the people and hand them out. Slices of oranges, swedish fish and jelly beans. I think beverages, too.

I am definitely not a runner, but I do find her stories interesting. Hope this helps.
