Marathon decisions and HRM findings

Friday, January 11, 2013

First off, let me just say thanks for the responses to my blog yesterday! Some made me laugh, but mostly I was just very relieved that all the responses were opposed to the idea of a stomach pump. Whew. Not everyone is crazy!

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday's blog (before it was derailed by a nasty stomach pumping device) was going to be about my complete inability to make a training decision for a Spring marathon. (First world runner problems, fo' sho'!) I signed up for a marathon in my home town in June. I ran this last year under the name of the Canton Marathon. I thought it went well and enjoyed the course (bwahaha, as much as anyone enjoys a marathon) but it got a lot of negative press. This year, the co-founders split up and one wasn't participating. New name, new course, blah blah. I fell for it and signed up on New Year's Day for the discount - $65 out of pocket. Negative press, didn't pay some vendors/cities for support. I figured it was about 50/50 on happening/being cancelled.

Well, this morning I read a lot of drama surrounding the race that came out a couple days ago. The co-founders were splitting, sure, but the one founder says the other took money from the fund so vendors couldn't be paid and she's still continuing on with the Canton Marathon once the second founder (who started his own race) pays her back. The kicker? The original is supposedly scheduled for Sunday, June 16th. The "new" one, which I didn't realize was started by the allegedly thieving founder (and I signed up for it!), is Saturday, June 15th. Really?

Oh boy. So I think the odds of EITHER marathon happening are at about 10%. Maybe less. So, it's on to the next option. Originally, I wanted to run the Cincinnati Flying Pig marathon: hilly but lots of fans/supporters/FUN. Yeah. I think I'm going to stick with that plan! It's 5/5/13, so I better get crackin' with a training plan!

In other workout news, I wore my Garmin while using the elliptical last night. I intended a short run, but realized all my good sports bras were in the washer. Still wet. Ew. While they rewashing, I did 30 mins on the elliptical (in a lesser, but adequate sports bra). I wore my Garmin, though, because we get points for "verified" workouts (meaning they need to be recorded with a HR monitor over a certain duration). Let me tell you - I thought I was workin' my BUTT off on that elliptical, but the HRM didn't reflect that very well. It took a couple minutes just to get over 100 bpm and holding it around 140 was hard, except when it was on a really tough level. 140 bpm is a pretty easy-effort run for me! Now I know I need to keep the difficulty level up on that infernal machine to get a calorie burn. Grr!

Tonight is a rest day, then I have 15 miles planned for tomorrow since it will be 60's in Ohio in January. Seriously. I'm pretty sure I was just skiing last weekend in a bunch of new snow. We're going skiing again at the end of the month... the weather better get a clue and get crankin' on the snow by then!

Have you ever signed up for a race that was cancelled? I haven't... yet!

Do you use a HRM when doing cardio? The HRM things on the elliptical (and most HRMs, actually) don't work for me. I HAVE to use something with a chest strap to get readings. I'm glad I wore my Garmin last night, that's for sure!

I should go read your blog abou the stomach pump... hmmm.

I always wear my HRM- when the last one broke, I took a year or so off without one- I didn't want to feel addicted to it and it was a nice change, but ultimately I love my HRM and am glad I got one :-)

The only race that ever got cancelled was the 2005 Turkey Trot or was it 2006? I can't remember. We showed up in downtown Cleveland... and let's just say it was so stinking icy, they called it..... as we are lined up at the starting line :-) and they they let us go into this truck... which was filled with popcicles.. it was an adventure for sure, as lots of people were running around downtown- just for fun :-)

Hope it works out- I didn't know all that stuff was going on... how crummy for Canton.

It sounds smart to start planning for a different marathon. I've also heard great things about Flying pig!
I also have a super tough time getting enough of a workout on the eliptical. Maybe because we're such awesome runners, huh?!

I tried to use the HRM strap on my garmin once for an outdoor run... couldn't get it to work.. no idea what I Was doing wrong... oh well.

I've heard the Flying pig is hilly and rough, but the course support can't be beat! (or so I hear)

I just got a HRM that came with my Garmin Forerunner 410...I haven't used it though. I'm really not sure how the whole thing works honestly. This might be a silly question but do you wear it under or over your shirt?

Hopefully your marathon won't be canceled and if it does I really hope you get your money back!
