Since about mid-December, I have been thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2013. I have never laid out a full year of goals before, and I'm sure that things will shift and adjust as the year moves forward and life happens. I have set goals in several areas, but I am writing here the ones that pertain to my physical health.
1. Earn my black belt in both jujitsu and Patriot martial arts.
As of now I may be eligible to test for both in late March, but I will be testing for one at a time to allow me to fully prepare and focus on each. Short term, I will attend 3-5 classes a week, study my notes and practice techniques on my own.
2. Run 1000 miles.
This breaks down to just less than 20 miles a week. Quite an ambitious goal for me, but I plan to run at least two half marathons. The training for these will get me a long way toward reaching this goal.
Additionally, I will be helping my 2 older kids (10 and 7) run a couple times each week. They both love running time with Mom and/or Dad.
3. Start a garden.
I LOVE to garden, but I have lived in TX 7 years now and have yet to attempt this. The climate here is vastly different than where I grew up near Buffalo, NY and I will learn the growing seasons and techniques for this area. I have a small yard and a dog, so if anyone has any tips for making growing boxes or recommendations on where to start I'd love the help.
The fresh herbs and produce I grow can only help support any health goals I set for myself!
4. Lower my body fat %
I am in a weight range where I feel somewhat comfortable right now, but I feel there is room for improvement. My BMI is in the normal range but my body fat percentage is overweight. Diabetes runs rampant in my family, and I am determined to do everything I can to lower my risk.
All of the above goals plus continuing to monitor what I eat (as little processed food as possible) should help me achieve this.
So there it is. My health-related goal list for 2013.
