Cold Remedies and AKA: PERFECT

Thursday, January 10, 2013

Tis the season to be sick in bed, for me anyway. There are no words to explain how boring it has been. I was sick for two days, woke up feeling better. Out of obligation, I attended an all day fundraiser only to wake up the next day feeling worse than ever. Seemed resting became more important at that point so rest I did. No activity unless necessary, I feel weak and unhappy.

I am doing a few things including Dr. Oz's magic bullet nose spray, tea, honey lemon, cinnamon, ginger, rest, eating right, vitamins and staying in doors low heat.

I found these also:

1. Epsom Salt Baths
Besides helping you relax and sleep better at night, some believe epsom salts actually help detoxify your body, increase your white blood cell count and speed up the healing process (source)!

2. Raw Garlic (this made my tummy burn-no thank you).
Raw garlic is full of amazing health benefits--including being anti-viral. Consuming it helps boost the immune system and fight infections (source). If eating it raw makes you squeamish, you can purchase odorless garlic capsules. But, first, check out these 7 ways to eat raw garlic. One of them might appeal to you!

3. Essential Oils
Essential oils have become my first line of defense against any ailment that has plagued our household over the past couple years.

The pets are so bored they have been bickering. Under normal circumstances both Moo and Baily (AKA: PERFECT) get out more and generally happy with their lives. Having been stuck in the house more, the ever loving Moo and Boo have been on each others nerves.

Shamefully I admit their little spats have been entertaining me. emoticon

I often call Baily Perfect. Truly I adore my perfectly sweet little dog. She has been laying right by my side throughout this imprisonment of a cold as though she had one also.

I hope by now of the time of my reading this you are feeling better! I find colds so annoying! I read that the raw garlic with a piece of bread helps you swallow it and not feel so much burn. Chicken soup with lots of pepper may not be a cure, but it certainly is comforting and opens those nasal passages. I heard recently some elderly ladies talking about cutting a raw onion and putting it on the night stand beside your bed and it getting rid of colds. I think most are like Granny's remedy on the Beverly Hillbillies. Take a shot of this, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and in a week to 10 days you will be cured. Do all you want, but rest, get plenty of fluids and in a week to 10 days you will be cured! Feel better if you aren't already! Love to the pups!

When we lived in Greece, my dad would make hot tea, add some lemon and honey, and a big shot of Metaxa brandy - if nothing else, it helped him sleep all night despite nasty colds.

If we lived close to each other I'd take your doggie babies for walks. Hope you feel better soon so you can get back to your hikes. emoticon -- Lou

So sorry you have been sick :( I must admit, one small blessing in my life has been I never seem to catch any illness no matter who is hacking or sneezing around me. In that small way I have been lucky. I use garlic powder to spice up my food. I am also into very spicy habernero pepper jelly with very high heat -most can't tolerate it. Maybe I fry the bugs before they can even get a start lol.
Feel better soon,

Poor V, M and B! I feel for you all, no fun being sick...been there done that! Baily's look in the pic says it all!
My best advice is Neilmed Sinus Rinse, helps clean those old sinuses out. But, if you are completely stuffed up, not recommended at that time, but later will keep you from getting a sinus infection after a cold. emoticon emoticon

Baily is so adorable - give her a big hug from me!!

As for cold remedies, I try to PREVENT them as much as possible, of course - that's probably the best 'remedy.' So I get a flu shot every single year as soon as they are available, take vitamins and supplements such as odorless garlic [which also helps deter ticks and mosquito bites, by the way], drink plenty of fluids and all the other things we're supposed to do.

Your list is great - epsom salts does seem to detoxify and can be used not only after you're sick but as a preventive - not sure about the essential oils as I haven't used those much but the garlic is definitely a great option for me, although I do use the odorless garlic capsules rather than raw garlic. I'm with you on the tummy burning effect, not to mention the, um, 'odor' they carry! It actually gets into your system and the odor gets on your skin, not 'just' the breath - but the odorless garlic seems to work just as well for me without the odor effect.

When I do get sick, which occasionally happens, I believe in REST AND MORE REST - it seems to give my body a chance to recover on its own. I also have discovered Tylenol Multi-Symptom cold medicine and it has really worked for me! Also for my son and husband, amazingly enough. It seems that taking that at the first sign of problems will knock all the bad germs right out of me, at least so far!

Hope you feel better soon!!

Considering I've had this stuff lingering for months in varying degrees, I'm obviously not the one to seek remedies from!

I too have been down and out with a tiresome cold - I have tried the Emergen C and Zicam remedies, but they really fdon't work. I think rest is the best thing for us - too bad I have to work for a living.
