Holy DOMS, Batman!

Wednesday, January 09, 2013

(DOMS = Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, in case you weren't familiar with that term. I think everyone is familiar with the feeling, though!)

I also belong to a website called Fitocracy. I have been on it for a while now. It has a point system for exercise, although the points are weirdly calibrated. I can get 350 points for a 20 minute weight workout, but only 25 points for walking for 45 minutes? I don't get how that works. Anyway, I was doing a body-weight ab workout, a pretty quick one, but one that was challenging to me. After logging all my activity, I got 22 whole points for it. Grrr... so even though it wasn't arms day, I grabbed my weights and lifted enough to get me a (much) higher point total.

That was yesterday morning. Today my shoulders and upper back are SOOOOOOORE. I have a date with the foam roller later on, once I get off work.

Book recommendation, btw: You Are Your Own Gym

It lists a whole slew of body weight exercises, with useful pictures and step by step instructions. It also gives a workout program that I found incredibly strenuous and difficult, but I pick and chose what I do from the book and construct my own program. I don't care for the book's under-emphasis on cardio, but I'm not about to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

There's evidently a new one out that's female-specific, though I understand a lot of the content is the same: Body By You
I haven't checked it out yet, but if you do, give me a holler and tell me how you like it.

I'm assuming you mean Fitocracy? Ever since Dr. Oz recommended it a week or so ago, it's been flooded. I would try setting up an account late at night when the site traffic isn't so high. It's full of body-builders and such, but if you aren't easily intimidated, and accept that everyone is on their own journey, it's a good motivational tool and fun site.

I love/hate DOMS. It sucks to be in pain but I feel like it's a badge of honor that I earned and I like to wear it. It reminds me each time I move "that's right, I worked so hard I deserve these sore muscles." I also like to be able to feel my muscles under all my padding. ;) It seems like I feel them flex and tighten better when they are sore.
Congrats on going the extra mile!
