For the month of January, I am focusing on my eating. I am trying to take my goals one at a time and thought it was logical to start with eating because when I eat right I will have the energy to work out. Truthfully, I do like to work out and find the time when I am motivated...well the goal of changing eating habits is to find the motivation. So far so good!
I am on week three of the taming your sweet tooth challenge and making progress and following the steps. This week I have drastically lowered my sugar intake and I can tell. I am also warding off cravings. Yesterday afternoon at work I wanted some sugar so badly but I resisted. I was proud of myself because I even have a dark chocolate candy bar in my desk. I still resisted and continued on with my day. I still have some areas that I need to cut out sugar out and I am working on that. I truthfully cannot afford to just throw food out and start over so I am making changes slowly. When my current yogurt supply is gone, I will start buying plain yogurt and adding my own fruit. I am no longer buying anything with white flour and finding alternative ways to quench my sweet tooth. I had some angel food cake the other day with cherries (not canned but flash frozen) on it and I enjoyed it. I have also not had soda or sweet tea in almost a week!!!!! I also have no desire for it.
While researching sugar addiction, clean eating and how to get over my sugar addiction I found that I might have a build up of yeast in my intestines. Now warning, this might be slightly TMI but it is not the yeast you think. I have chronic sinus congestion and sinusitis. I get sinus infections all the time and my congestion is typically bad but got worse while I was pregnant and never went back to normal...it is still bad. I read that can be a symptom of a yeast build up and the only way to rid your body of it is to cut out yeast and sugar (yeast thrives on sugar) for 3 weeks. Well I cut it out for a few days to see how it went and my congestion was WAY better. Then yesterday, I had some bread because my wonderful co-worker's husband made a bunch of bread and she was giving some away. It was so YUMMY!!!! Well this morning congestion and yeast symptoms are back. Now I am not going to a doctor to get this diagnosed. I am just going to continue my clean eating and eliminating white, refined sugar and really watch my yeast intake for 3-6 weeks (they put it in vitamins and such as well I found out!). I am going to leave fruit in my diet for a while but if it does not get better, then I will switch to only fruits low on the glycemic index for natural sugar. I am also, for now, avoiding clean eating sugar substitutes such as honey, agave, and pure maple syrup. I don't want to feed the yeast! For a few days it will probably be like Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, "Feed Me Seymour!" But I won't let it get me down! These changes will also help me lose weight. I am not going low carb, just yeast free and the clean eating supports that!
