Ode to Oatmeal (written during breakfast)

Iíve always loved breakfast. I had one of those moms who cooked every morning, before school. Mom said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day and that you couldnít run your engine, unless your tank was full. I distinctly remember her giving me a big bowl of Cream of Wheat and telling me that it would stick to my ribs. Iíd walk to school, thinking about those thick clumps of Cream of Wheat, clinging to my ribs and gradually wearing away, as the day went on. I felt like I had protection, invisible breakfast armor. I still do. Audrey and I are the breakfast eaters in this family. We love it and we have to have it, every day.

Todayís Creativity Journal assignment goes right along with the breakfast theme. Day 9: Make something with your breakfast before you eat it.

Voila! Oatmeal Art

For a double whammy, I wrote this heartwarming ode, while I was eating:
Ode to Oatmeal (written during breakfast)

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, how I love thee
Thy 100% whole grain oats, rolled to perfection
Give cause to rejoice and beget morning genuflection
No wonder the Quaker Man worships you so

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, thou art far superior
To the Tiger, the Cap'n, the lowbred Leprechaun
The sugar-drenched Toucan and the Rabbit, woebegone
Your soluble fiber brings heart-healthy diets great delight

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, thy wonders are ceaseless
Thou reduceth cholesterol, with one mighty sweep
Thy sodium-free power makes my heart weep
To be filling, yet nutritious, is beyond human comprehension

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, I will shower thee with gifts
Of blueberries, strawberries, raisins and more
The occasional cinnamon chip from the grocery store
Your old-fashioned oats will be never be forgotten

(No, I do NOT have too much time on my hands. I was just making creative use of my breakfast time. LOL)

Eat your breakfast--my mom was smart!! :)

"lowbred Leprechaun" LOL! I think oatmeal is gruel. I'll have it occasionally just because I want a quick, easy, hot & healthy option but for taste and texture I'd rather have almost anything else. It's nice to see someone really loves it! Great song!

I LOVE hot cereal (with the exception of "cream of" cereals). I mix my Coach's Oats with some dried fruit and ground flax seed meal. I can pop that in a small ziplock bag to take to work. Add water and 5 minutes in the microwave, it hold me until I can have lunch, 5-6 hours later. emoticon

Once a year, my husband and I do a nineteen day religious Fast from sunrise to sunset. We get up before dawn to eat, and then eat after sunset. That's when I eat oatmeal, and love it. I don't do it regularly because it takes longer than the nutrition shake I make every morning, but this makes me reconsider. It means getting up even earlier to exercise, meditate, write, and then make oatmeal before heading off to work. Hmmmm...maybe I can talk my husband into fixing it.

I was always on a diet so I never ate breakfast until I started changing my habits a few years ago. I have oatmeal most days and I love it!

I love oatmeal too! Just discovered the Better Oats Revolution (they make some of their products with artificial sweeteners but the Revolution line just uses a bit of sugar)... it's maybe a tad less filling then steelcut but is faster to make... I just fire up the water kettle and keep it upstairs in my bedroom with my SparkPeople coffee mug and it's perfect for a warm morning appetizer before I get downstairs for the rest of my brekky!

Your oatmeal looks like it was all pimped up good!! I like to add more cinnamon or cardomom in mine, and I tend to add stevia, or molasses, or honey... It truly is a "blank canvas" and more varieties possible then all the junkfood "cereals" at the grocery store! Even chunks of dark chocolate are yummy in oatmeal...coconut oil... Sometimes I even have it for dinner with some butter and cheese and Bragg's liquid aminos...

Wonderful blog!!

My sweet mommy cooked a full pound of bacon for me every morning! Well, I did share with three siblings... These were crunchy, delicious strips---easy to grab and go out the door.Yum!
(.... When I discovered, as a grown-up, that restaurants serve only 2 or 3 pieces, I thought--- how stingy) ! Ha!

When I left home, I vowed I''d never eat porridge again. Whether cream of wheat or oatmeal, the pasty texture was revolting to me. Cold cereal, smoothie, omelet, pancakes, peanut butter sandwich....there are many possibilities. I always eat breakfast and the blog and comments have aroused my curiosity. Maybe I'll try oatmeal again. emoticon

After all these years, oatmeal still sticks to my ribs. Seriously, it's the only breakfast food that keeps the hunger and empty feeling away until lunch. Love the stuff. emoticon . Oh, and a very creative mind you have, it was fun!

Oatmeal is like a blank canvas. By itself, it's boring, but you can have it so many different ways depending on what you have on hand or what your mood is. I have it almost every day, winter or summer.

I make mine with milk instead of water & usually use agave nectar to sweeten, if needed. Here are some ingredients I add to switch things up:
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce & cinnamon
1/2 cup pumpkin puree & pumpkin pie spice
sliced banana
chopped dried apricots
1 TBSP peanut butter or roasted almond butter
sliced almonds
chopped apple
Craisins
raisins
blueberries
strawberries

I had oatmeal too! Steelcut Apple cinnamon oatmeal with chia seed! Yummy, the weather here is gray and foggy. The warm cinnamon oatmeal makes you feel all warm inside. There was a time when oatmeal and I didn't get along but these days I'm really starting to enjoy it!

Hurrah for oatmeal!! I love oatmeal in the winter and cook mine with frozen fruit and flax seed. I love that it warms me and stays with me through the day. Reminds me of a book I got for my grandson called "The Kissing Hand". When I think of oatmeal, I feel good and know I am looking after myself. A positive affirmation each time!! Much like the kissing hand! emoticon

That reminded me that my mom made cream of wheat , oatmeal and pancakes a lot when I was growing up but mom only had coffee. Never understood that. Now I eat anything that sounds good for breakfast. Today I ate Tuna salad, lettuce, tomatoes and Pears.

    Great blog!
My Mom always made Cream of Wheat for us as kid. She would put food coloring in it to make us excited about eating a bland looking breakfast. Of course this was in the 70's before people would freak about food coloring!
