Ode to Oatmeal (written during breakfast)

Iíve always loved breakfast. I had one of those moms who cooked every morning, before school. Mom said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day and that you couldnít run your engine, unless your tank was full. I distinctly remember her giving me a big bowl of Cream of Wheat and telling me that it would stick to my ribs. Iíd walk to school, thinking about those thick clumps of Cream of Wheat, clinging to my ribs and gradually wearing away, as the day went on. I felt like I had protection, invisible breakfast armor. I still do. Audrey and I are the breakfast eaters in this family. We love it and we have to have it, every day.

Todayís Creativity Journal assignment goes right along with the breakfast theme. Day 9: Make something with your breakfast before you eat it.

Voila! Oatmeal Art

For a double whammy, I wrote this heartwarming ode, while I was eating:
Ode to Oatmeal (written during breakfast)

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, how I love thee
Thy 100% whole grain oats, rolled to perfection
Give cause to rejoice and beget morning genuflection
No wonder the Quaker Man worships you so

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, thou art far superior
To the Tiger, the Cap'n, the lowbred Leprechaun
The sugar-drenched Toucan and the Rabbit, woebegone
Your soluble fiber brings heart-healthy diets great delight

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, thy wonders are ceaseless
Thou reduceth cholesterol, with one mighty sweep
Thy sodium-free power makes my heart weep
To be filling, yet nutritious, is beyond human comprehension

Oatmeal, my oatmeal, I will shower thee with gifts
Of blueberries, strawberries, raisins and more
The occasional cinnamon chip from the grocery store
Your old-fashioned oats will be never be forgotten

(No, I do NOT have too much time on my hands. I was just making creative use of my breakfast time. LOL)

Eat your breakfast--my mom was smart!! :)

I loved your BLOG. My family was raised by the same mother and Oatmeal, Mr Old fashion is the king here as well. I have to laugh every time I get a bowl because my sister was complaining to the cruise ship of their inability to make a good bowl of oats for her. Trust me my sister is in need of her morning oats and occasional prune accompaniment (but that is a whole different matter). Lovely post! emoticon

AWESOME! I grew up on lumpy oatmeal and Cream of Wheat. What a great way to start the day. I currently enjoy steel cut oatmeal with fresh cranberries and walnuts. YUM!!!! Loved your ode!

Believe it or not, I didn't start eating oatmeal until I was probably 65! My mother tried to give it to me as a child, but I hated the feel of it in my mouth. Because I knew it was good for us, I made it for my children and kept quiet about not liking it myself. Finally, after I retired, my husband started making it, and I found that if I added peanut butter, chopped walnuts, raising, blueberries, honey, etc. etc. (though not all at once), I quite liked oatmeal, and i now have it several times each week.

Try 1/2 cup rolled flakes (I buy them in bulk from Sprouts) with 1/4 cup dried cranberries, 8 pecan halves, broken up, and 1 tsp. coconut oil, all cooked in 1 cup of almond milk. Yummy!

I remember hearing the oatmeal or Cream of Wheat sticking to the ribs story as a kid too.
A lot of Moms must have told that to their kids.

Love, love, love oatmeal! Used to eat it with skim milk and several spoonfuls of sugar. Now I eat with skim milk and a pack of equal or with a little brown sugar. Very good with only a few added calories. emoticon

Lovely poetry, lovely art...I only wish I could manage to like oatmeal! Alas! I have tried, but just looking at it makes me, well, run the other way. All is not lost, however - I do usually manage to eat breakfast. Dinner leftovers are high on my list, and cold pizza is right up there. ;-)

The only way I'll have oatmeal is blended and then I still think about it, I'm just not an oatmeal person and it was too many cabs.

I love it! emoticon Your "ode" that is ... and oatmeal too! That it funny but my mom said the same thing and made us oatmeal or cream of wheat.

Do you remember the commercial where the kids who would eat cream of wheat would go outside and play in the snow and the little bowl of hot cereal would be over their head the whole time?

I eat it five days a week ,every morning at work. I put my fruity carbwise yogurt on top, gives it a creamy texture and cools it down!

Thankfully, my dad was the cereal maker in my family(no lumps). The only one I won't ever eat again is Cream of Wheat. It got cold in my bowl one morning, so I wouldn't eat it. There were also lumps and they made me gag. My mom made me sit there at least through lunch, maybe dinner. I can't even look at it.
I now prefer steel cut oatmeal. It is much hardier and has a great bite. Instant oatmeal is horrible!

Our Moms were kindred spirits............always something warm for breakfast and the same "Stick to your ribs" theory.
I, too, love Oatmeal and fill it full of whatever fruit I have on hand and lots of cinnamon.
