Headed North instead of South today !

Tuesday, January 08, 2013

North of us is Waterville and South is Portland.
Monday it was Portland and got all of DH needs met. Podiatrist, Hair and Beard, Hip Classes and finally hotel reservations.
Tuesday we went North to have my glasses repaired and to try to resolve my being sold three expensive inhalers. The pharmacist was supposed to work on the refund but now he has the flu too so that did not happen.

We went to pick up DH walker and getting it paid for through medicare was $140.00 I told them I prefer a rental well Medicare will not pay for rental so I handed it over. No wonder Medicare is going broke. There is so much waste. The walker will be used for no more than 2 weeks and then it stays in the closet being a pain taking up valuable space.
We brought it home and I sanitized it, then DH had a practice walk through the house with it.
Finally a Crock pot of vegetables ready to freeze for the future use.

Tomorrow I have to drive back South to Portland to see my Spine Doctor. Now I am off to bed because I am still coughing way too much so sleep is disrupted.

Thanks Spark friends Pat in Maine.

I have heard that if you rub Vicks Vapor Rub on your feet and put socks on, it will help your night time cough. I don't know if it works but it is worth the try.

Hope you feel better soon.

Crazy about the walker!

I have a walker. It can be handy to have around sometimes. I also have 3 pair of crutches, a cane, 2 electric carts, and a wheelchair. LOL.

You are very blessed to have access to any medical device.. the minimal insurance I pay for though my employer(it is all I can afford) never covers anything.. I had to pay cash for everything.
I save every piece I pay for or is offered to me.. hanging in my basement. I have an antique pair of wooden crutches that my grandmother used for a year when she was hit m by a car and broke both legs. I paid cash for another pair of pediatric ones for DD , and my carpal tunnel brace,,
Medicare paid for mom's walker,, wanted to buy another one later that had wheels, I told them NO!! Pay for a set of wheels that adapt to the walker,, they did it.. We have a walker that my Dad carried around when he had ALzheimers... everything but a cane..
leg brace too,,neck braces..

I calculated I have about $5.000 worth of devices,, could never afford to buy them..

Keep in mind that later on you can get a set of wheels for that walker if either of you ever need it.
None of us gets younger year by year.

Guess what helps? Bicycle hooks in your garage! Crutches, wheelchairs, braces in trash bags, etc. will hang on them and everything is out of your way.

Local Civitan clubs, ask Lions club, Kiwanis, etc if they have a needy person or nursing home, assisted living,, how about local mission? Church?

Sounds like things are coming together and running smoothly at this time. Medicare and Social Service Programs waste Millions of Our Tax Payer Dollars Each and Every Year. It is a Crying Shame Too. Look at all the Spending in Washington and our National Debt. But yet President Obama says we do not have a Spending Problem. I could write a Blog on this but will stop. But I hope you see the Picture of all of it. I hope your Spine Dotor appointment goes okay too. And have a very safe trip too. Have a Good Night Sleep too. God Bless You and DH. How far is Portland from You ? Hope it is less then 100 miles. Have a Super Great Day and Take Care. Take Care. Hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat, progress - that is what is happening for you. Each thing can get checked off.
Have you tried sucking on chewable vitamin C's? I do that for a sore throat or a cough. It seems to get to the area faster.
HUGS, Terry

You sure are doing a lot of traveling but this will all be done soon. There are many groups that provide walkers and wheelchairs for free for people to use. You just have to find them.

Keeping you in my prayers and hope this coughing stops soon. Take care.

Hugs to you and DH....Mary Anne

**SIGH** Medicare will allow you to BUY a walker but not RENT one. Where is the common sense! (insert sarcasm!) Oh well, glad he has a walker.

Hope your cough gets better already. Sheesh! Traven safely today. HUGS

Hale needed a walker 15 years or so ago, and we still have it. I drove a good sized nail into the wall in the back of the garage, and it hangs there till he needs it. Maybe you could hang yours somewhere out of the way?

Storing those costly aids (walkers, etc) can be a real pain and space thief. Especially when it is only needed short term. Sorry you have to do that....

Hi Pat,my seems like you are having quite a time. I'm so sorry you've been so sick.I wish we lived closer so I could at least bring you chicken soup! Chris's truck is still not working so I'm carless....two weeks now.He is ordering the part today that he thinks will repair it-hope it does, but I've been focusing on getting the current series of illustrations done.Plenty of work to do-just slow going...
When my grandmother lived with us,we had to buy a wheel chair for her and then we took it back to the place that we purchased it and they were supposed to refund some of the money for it-as it was used but we never saw a penny. I bugged them for about 2 years with letters and calls. Something is wrong with the system, this I know.
I hope things start getting much better for you both soon.We miss seeing you. Love to both of you.

Yep medicare is weird. I was told Erik's co-pay was ??? because that was what Medicare required, Erik just got a check for $56. from his brace. I also learned that they will not pay for replacements for 5 years unless Erik has a dramatic weight loss/gain! Go figure, he works out and his hard on it, do they want him to sit in a chair and gain weight from being inactive?

Who knows?
Please take care of yourself and feel better, so you can deal with the upcoming surgery and rehab.

Yes, it is no wonder about Medicare Pat. That is absolutely terrible. We have a walker that I could have mailed you for cheaper. DH was hurt nearly 5 years ago now, and we still have the walker, crutches, and some other medical items. We don't know what to do with them...certainly don't want to just throw them away. We are looking for a place to donate them.

Anyway...glad you two are getting things done. Hope you have a good day today! Good luck with the spine update us!

Sounds like you have everything well in hand!! Had to chuckle when you talked about not wanting to store all these medical aides. We have a big hatbox full of braces and bandages etc. plus the walker and crutches. I feel like I could do a rental business!!

We are going into a cold spell for us....sure hope our palm trees don't freeze, they are so touchy. I imagine the freeze protect on the pool will run all night for the next few nights. $$$

Good luck on your journey tomorrow. emoticon

Things are coming together for you now. I am so glad DH is feeling better and your on the mend too.

Now we both need heavy snow fall for a while. Just looked outside and the snow fall has started.

I have an early morning appointment with the specialist and am hoping to get out before the street plow comes by (I'll be stuck here till the yard plow comes) they do good work but can't give a time table.

The weather bureau was beginning to think we might have a brown winter.....but there is no irony on how long this snow could stay on the ground.

We have had some very cold days and nights. This snow may bring milder temps.

Take care. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

One could get sick just from Medicare's inefficiencies and insufficienies. Ugg! But I'm glad to hear that you're getting to bed early. Have another safe trip.

you know when you are finihed with that walker find a clinic or nursing home that could allow someone to use it for free that
s what my aunt did and it became an awesome gift for soneone homeless who could no longer use crutches ask around my friend i did that with my crutches and both those boots for a sprained and broken ankle and will do that for the 'one size fits all brace the er put on mt hand that caused to to go numb..those boots were close to 900 apiece and i don't know about the brace for the hand yet

you might make contact with the osteopathic school in biddeford maine and ask about donation programs as they do a lot for the community
