Review of 2012 and Goals for 2013

Monday, January 07, 2013

2012 was a whirlwind for me. I was working very hard, and achieving new things in my career. But balance went out the window and my health really suffered. This past year really made me think hard about what I want in my life and how I want to spend it. As a result I've made the decision to look for more balance in my life, and I've shed a major career responsibility that I really didn't need (and that I wasn't getting compensated for adequately). Also I'm back here on Spark making healthier lifestyle choices and meeting supportive friends, for which I'm truly grateful.

Here are some of my goals for 2013:

1. Complete the conservative Couch to 5K program. Right now I am doing a twelve-week walking program, and when I complete that I'm going to start in Month 2 of this program. I hope to be running 5K again by the fall.

2. Lose 60 pounds by December 31. This is 5 pounds a month and should be pretty doable. This will get me within 20 of my goal as 2014 begins!

3. Implement a more effective time management/organization system. I am planning to use Julie Morgenstern's "Time Management from the Inside Out" to do this.

I think that's enough for me to bite off for now ... I tend to bite off way more than I can chew! Here's to all of us reaching our goals in 2013!

I've been reading Getting Things Done by David Allen. I would be interested in you take on Julie Morgenstern...

I think these are great goals and definitely achievable! Striving to put more balance in your life is great and something a lot of us find hard to do. I don't know what Julie Morgenstern's Time Management book says but I wish you lots of luck in implementing it. I think that using the K.I.S.S. principle (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) is a good way of going about figuring out what goals you want to achieve. I think the goals you have decided to focus on will be enough and hopefully help you to get more balance in your life. Good luck! emoticon emoticon

Love your goals. They are all very achievable. Balance is truly important, but not always easy to achieve. Love that you are going to be working on time management/organization. I am sure that will help you achieve the balance in your life. Keep pushing, stay focused, remain strong! emoticon emoticon

Congratulations on resigning from the company that wasn't paying you for all the work you did for them. It's difficult to make a move to put an end to something and you did it! Striving for balance is something high on my goal list like you, and I also have Julie Morganstern's Time Management book! Sounds like the three goals you chose are substantial ones and enough for the year. I wish you all the best in reaching them! Breaking the weight loss into the five pound increments sounds good, and the walking program is a great one. I have confidence in you that you'll be running the 5K in the fall! emoticon

You are right in saying your second goal is doable. Just don't get frustrated if some weeks/months don't meet your desired schedule. That's usually my downfall and then I give up rather than look at the big picture - how much closer I am to my goal!
Time management and organization are key to success in all you do. You will find your life moving along much smoother as you gain the control you want in those areas.
Stay strong and stay positive!
