Decided against a gym membership!

Monday, January 07, 2013

I see so many other sparkers posting about going to the gym, but after calling around and looking at where the gyms were located (and going back over my fitness trackers!) I decided it's not for me.

I don't get in extra fitness when I have a gym membership, and from my notes and such I tend to miss the regularly scheduled classes and then skip the whole day. My work schedule is crazy, I have board meetings and volunteer commitments regularly through the week. And now I'll also have school!

Since January of last year, my mom and I have been taking Zumba classes together...and it's been nice, because I only pay for the classes I attend! But then, there were weeks I couldn't go at all...the classes were only Monday and Wednesday...and it was a Zumba gold class (perfect for Mom, NOT for me!) And in December, the teacher cancelled Monday classes. So now it's just Wednesdays, which works even less than the old schedule!

So I spent the money and bought the Zumba Exhilarate DVD set. It's substantially less expensive than just two months of gym dues or even Zumba classes (had they stayed at 2 days a week) and I'll be able to work out at my convenience, at home, whenever I want.

(And since my apartment has a gym with the machines, all I was missing were group classes. I already have yoga DVDs, bootcamp DVDs, stability ball, and resistance bands, so I would only have been paying for the Zumba classes!)

I think it's the right choice for me! Has anyone used these DVDs? Any tips?!

    Good Blog............Thanks.

I don't belong to a gym either. While there are several close to my house, I just don't get a good workout, with all the waiting for machines, treadmills, etc it takes me so long to get a good workout in. I started doing more functional fitness a few years ago and am much fitter. I use kettlebells, walking, running, bodyweight exercises, etc and get a good workout in without delay and have some outdoor fun to boot (when weather permits)

Have a great day
Michael

I have a gym membership, but only because a) my work pays for it and b) it's next door to work. It's five minutes from my house. I wouldn't bother otherwise. As it is, I also never make it to the scheduled classes. I use it for swiming when I have free time and for walking laps during my lunch hour. I do a lot of cardio at home.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing! My sister in law has the DVD's and I borrowed them to compare to my class and they are very similar! Plus like you said a one time price instead of weekly classes or a gym membership does not compare! Zumba is a great way to lose weight and keep in shape. Good decision!

Sounds like you are choosing what is best for you and that is the most important thing. Find something that you know you can do at your convenience and don't feel forced to do something just because you paid for a memborship becasue that won't last. I don't know much of anything about Zumba or the workout DVD's, but I know I have used workout DVD's every day since July 1st and I love it! There are days where I can't always get it in at the same time so that allows me to move it around my schedule. If you can enjoy the Zumba workouts and they are comparable to the classes, I think you will enjoy not having to stick to a class schedule, especially with your crazy work/school schedule. Best of luck and I hope they really work for you!

Good choice on the gym. Any thoughts on keeping Mom involved? That was something you touched on when first blogging about memberships.

If your apartment has a gym with all the machines, then it seems a good idea not to waste your money on a gym membership, especially if your schedule makes it difficult for you to go.

As I stopped dancing a few months back (due to problems I had with a fellow dancer) and having to reduce my hours of Zumba/Bokwa because of the shin splints, I've re-invested the saved money in a gym membership, but I'm lucky to be able to visit it at least 3 times a week, sometimes 4 when my son spends the whole weekend at his dad's. So it does make it worthwhile, as all the classes are also included in the fee.

Let us know what you think of the Zumba DVD. I adore Zumba but I've never seen any of the DVDs emoticon

I have some Firm DVDs and Charlene Prickett videos I go back to time and again. Right now, I'm trying the gym again, but who knows. Do what works for you. Good luck! emoticon

Please post how you end up liking the Zumba DVD... I have done it on my Kinect but I'm not very good at it, and I feel like it's hard to learn just by going along. I'm not sure if the DVDs break it down a little before really getting into it. The Kinect does have a learning part, but even that's too fast for me!

One of my friends started dating a dancer about a month ago and she's been trying to get me to go to a Zumba class 5 minutes from my house that she goes to. Tonight I got enough guts to attend - then the parking lot was full, and by the time I parked next door at the library's parking lot and climbed over a snow pile I went in to find the class was full. Oh well... that's one of the reasons I don't pay for a gym membership, if it's busy then you're out of luck with getting the right machine or class.

My husband and I bought an elliptical about 2 or 3 years ago. It did cost a lot of money, but 1 year of YMCA membership for the 2 of us was about 1,000 dollars, so it paid for itself in less than 2 years. I love being able to get on for just 10 minutes or 2 hours, whatever suits my desire that day. I don't blame you at all for creating your own home gym.

Good luck w/ the DVDs!

Gym memberships just aren't for everyone. Even if it's one of those 24 hour ones, there are just times when it doesn't fit into your schedule. You're lucky to have gym equipment available, and it sounds like a good idea to start using it in stead of going to a gym.

Let us know how it goes for you!

Sounds like the right choice at this time. How lucky for you to have a fitness room at your apartment complex!

I was looking at the Zumba DVDs this weekend. I'd love to hear what you think of them! The gym is also not for me, as I prefer to be outside walking or jogging or biking. However, this time of year when the daily high is below freezing that can be a challenge, so I'm using DVDs as well.
