Lessons Learned........

Sunday, January 06, 2013

Yesterday was a wonderful day spent with 8 of the most favorite people in the world, my grandchildren! We went to the Children's Museum and spent the day learning so many different things, having fun and just enjoying each others company! Lots of walking, bending, stretching....even a trip to the museum can be a workout! emoticon

Across the street the local Community Center was having it's 36th Anniversary complete with the park filled with vendors....all relating to "health". We joined the Mayors "Get Fit" walking team and signed up to walk 100 miles each by June 30th. Along with that we were given a free T-Shirt, a wonderful water bottle and a pedometer each! The grands are really thrilled to have joined and are looking forward to our weekly walks along the Rillito River here in Tucson. There were so many things to see and do along with a bag full of "freebies". My DIL even got a brand new booster seat for the youngest grandson!

Needless to say, the kids got hungry (as kids do) and we went into the Community Center where they were serving a reasonably priced lunch (remember, I'm feeding 8 kids here)! There were 2 choices on the "menu", the first was a Hot Dog, Potato Chips and sugary Fruit Punch the second was Shredded Beef, Tortilla's, Refried Beans and Rice. Whoa here, I thought this was a "health" fair! emoticon

The kids were happy with the hot dogs but Nana (me) went hungry! I did go back to the one vendor that was handing out water in bottles and another that was giving a homemade trail mix of sorts (to which I took out the M&M's).

Lesson learned? ALWAYS CARRY A HEALTHY SNACK AND EXTRA WATER WITH YOU NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO! Needless to say I was starving when I got home. It was everything I had to not grab "whatever" I could find and scarf it down. I ended up with a quick lunch of natural, no sugar added P. Butter (1 TBS) on 1/2 an Orowheat whole wheat sandwich thin, 1 cup watermelon cubes and 1 carton of FF light vanilla yogurt. Problem solved but it was a lesson I learned the hard way and it won't happen again!

Sounds like such a fun day with your grand kids!!! It is amazing to hear about lunch at the health fair. Still some education needed for the organizers - lol! At least you were able to sustain yourself. Happy New Year's! emoticon
