Happy New Year! Fitness Gadget review
Saturday, January 05, 2013
For the last part of the year I have been using another site because my bodymedia device only worked with it. Now, over Christmas I got a fitbit which works here on Sparks so I am coming back. I still am hoping, though, that Sparkspeople will get a bar scanner that works on our phone because, wow, does that make entering easy.
Now, one might ask why does she have two devices now? Well, I love gadgets so not only do I now have a bodymedia and fitbit, but I have a forerunner also, and at times I use all three of them! They all teach me different things.
I use the forerunner for outdoor activities when I want to track my miles and heart rate and pace while I am walking or jogging. It pushes me to speed up!
The bodymedia device helped me to understand how many calories I actually burn throughout the day. I really feel like it is probably as accurate as I am going to get to know how much each year of age slows my metabolism. What I found, though, is after wearing it for extended periods of time, the place where the metal touches my arm becomes very irritated and itchy. After getting a few days of accurate readings, I then began to wear it only when I was working out to check the calorie burn. The step counter part of it, though, was not very motivating because many times it didn't count that i had moved. I also did not have the model that gives me on=the=scene counts so I would have to attach it to my computer at the end of the day to see all the charts and sometimes was very disappointed to find out it didn't work for whatever reason. I still will continue to use it here and there, though, to check my calorie burn although to read my stats I have to pay $5 a month for their website so eventually I think this will go byebye. It was a true eye opener, though, when I saw the calories I burned versus the calories I ate and what it would take to actually lose a pound!
The fitbit is my newest device, and I only have had it for a week and so far I love it! I don't trust the calorie burn part of it, but I love how it is super easy to wear, very easily picks up my movements, and I can check the screen and see where I am at. This has been extremely motivating to me! That really suprised me because I really didn't think I would care so much. When I see my low steps while at work, I actually go walk around, and it has encouraged me to exercise to get my steps up. Also their website is free and works with sparkspeople. So I love how it goes into the activity tracker here on Sparkspeople. But perhaps the most encouraging is on the fitbit website you can have your friends on there and check to see if you are keeping up with them. I got my mom one for Christmas so now we can check each other's steps and send messages to each other about how we are doing!
All in all I love my devices and they all motivate me to work out!
