Doesn't quite balance out..

Saturday, January 05, 2013

Yesterday was a good day. You know the kind.. nothing really special about it, but everything seems to go along well. Work was busy, which is always good, keeping me occupied and my mind engaged (most important!). Nutrition was good, and I managed to be creative to get my steps/fitness in.

Bill's birthday was Thursday.

To celebrate, we could go anywhere he wanted for dinner. Well, he decided yesterday that he wanted to go to Killer Burger.

I've mentioned this place before. It's down in Hollywood, a neighborhood not far from ours. We've walked down there, had dinner, and walked home afterward. Of course, that outing left us moaning and groaning on the walk back LOL It was worth it though.

So, Bill wanted a Killer Burger, he was gonna have one!

We drove down to the restaurant and had some delish food. He ordered a Jose Mendoza, and I had a Fun Guy. Both came with french fries, which I knew was coming and had already decided I would eat. The burger, though, was a different matter. I pulled the top bun off, munched happily on the meat and cheese and bacon and onions and mushrooms and pickles! and discarded the bottom burger as well. Most likely I didn't account for the calories entirely accurately, but I imagine I'm close.

At first, I had a flash of worry that I'd get strange looks for not eating the bun but then thought 'screw it!' and ate my food the way I wanted. Ha!

I know, it doesn't seem like a big deal, but at times being self-conscious rears its anxiety-ridden head and pokes me hard. I pushed it aside though, and Bill and I enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere.

Once we were done, we mosey'd out to the car and I grabbed the knit hat I brought with, pulled on my gloves, tucked in my scarf, plugged in my headphones, smooched Bill and walked home.

No, the 1.9 mi walk in 31 minutes did not balance out the calories I had just consumed (and loved every morsel of) but it did meet one of my BLC training weekend challenge requirement for Friday, upped my step count, and gave me 31 minutes of 'me' time to walk and be a little blank-minded, simply enjoying being outside and moving, even if it was chilly.

Sounds to me like a good day--it's not the occasional special occasion meal that does the damage, it's the daily overindulgence that does it. You balanced things out well by not bothering with the bun and with walking home for a little exercise, and you enjoyed it all; that's the way to do it. Happy birthday, Bill!

cc-- I think this is the way to do it, and it's totally balanced, on the grand scheme of things. You are still on track even though you ate a burger, and you didn't really go that over on calories.

The occaisional (sp?) burger is not what got me to my fat state. The every day burger did. But if I had to live my life thinking I would never have a burger again, well, hell-- that's not living. You walked over a mile, you put in some exercise time-- granted, not what you had in mind to "earn" your burger, but there are days where you totally over burn it. You're doing great.

Oh! by the by.... I'm on the waiting list for blc21 right now, so I may be joining you soon! Let me know which team you're on so I can bug you!

    Happy Birthday Bill!

Hubby has been wanting a burger but I'm holding out for a really good burger place with awesome fries. I checked out the website (in spite of what food porn does to me! LOL!) and it looks so good! I'm glad you both enjoyed the burger! And who cares if you get looks for not eating the bun. I would think lots of others do the same - I definitely do it if the bread isn't good and "worth" the calories.

We have to indulge every now and then and it's wonderful that you enjoyed it! (I get mad at myself when I indulge and don't completely enjoy - that's just not smart at all.)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I think the key point to your Killer Burger adventure was that you "loved every morsel of" your dinner. When you knowing splurge and you take time to enjoy it, then, to me, that's a victory. It's when I pick up the shovel to pile the food in as fast as possible that I know I've lost that particular battle.

Taking off the bun was quite clever if you ask me. (I know, you didn't but...) Every calorie we don't consume is a calorie that we don't have to burn off. I wonder how many followed your example because they had been wanting to but had chickened out until you did it. High 5s girl!

Now, how far is it to walk from Michigan to Hollywood? I want one of those burgers! LOL

Good job on making the choice to ditch the bun. I do it all the time as I am gluten intolerant.

lol didnt even tempt me. i havent had a burger since the fair in August..and that was only due to necessity.
they lost me at peppers and onions on it..yuck..and peanut butter?? on a burger? not me.

if i was going to build a burger i'd do it like this:
Juicy hamburger
bacon
whatever that old cheese sauce they used to use at Ground Round in the 80s was.
mushrooms
lettuce
thinly sliced tomato
toasted hard roll bun.

noone makes them like that so i stay away....lol!!

OMG you weren't kidding when you said food porn! Holy cow (quite literally)! We have a place called The Works Burger in town and it's equally sinful and also strangely coincidentally Chris' favourite place to eat!

Good for you for taking the "me time" and hoofing it home. Sure the burger and fries may not have been the best meal you could have had but you still made a healthy choice to walk home rather than sitting in the car. Proud of you girlie!!

Wow! Look at you here on a weekend. Way to go on walking home. And good job on putting aside what other people think of your eating and doing it your way! Have a super weekend!
