This Word Means So Much To Me...

Saturday, January 05, 2013

... The quality or condition of one who understands; comprehension.
... Individual or specified judgment or outlook; opinion
... A reconciliation of differences; a state of agreement
... A disposition to appreciate or share the feelings and thoughts of others; sympathy
... Compassionate; sympathetic

I suppose this word, like yesterdays word, is another word I have really learned to deal with more since my sobriety. I've always been one who wishes others would at least TRY to understand me. But lately I have learned its also very important for me to understand others as well. It's an unselfish act that I need to work on every day. I also need to remember, I'm not always going to completely understand....but I have to at least try. Understanding takes a lot of work. It's truly an unselfish act which takes time and compassion! To hear someone say to me, "I understand" is as rewarding to me as hearing them say, "I love you". Understanding is SO important to me...why...maybe because I don't quite understand myself just yet and to hear that others do, well, maybe that brings me closer to knowing just who I really am.

I think understanding others is soo important. There's a reason why you keep them around so by understanding others you start to understand more about yourself. Every single one of us has a different paradigm, and it shifts everytime we learn something new or discover greater understanding.

Here's the difference though. Just because you understand it doesn't mean you have to agree with it. I think that was an extremely important lesson I learned when it came to understanding people and situations.
