Morning Run

Friday, January 04, 2013

My trainer has been telling me for month, literally months that he wants to go for a run. I have told him I'm happy to go anytime and he can pick pace and distance. He's not a runner, he does martial arts and I think he much prefers strength training in terms of his own workouts. He also had pneumonia in late September which put these running plans on break. He told me he wanted to go over xmas break but didn't get to it. So finally he went this morning with me.

It's fun to be better at something than he is :-) He started off at a good pace but we had to walk 3 or 4 times over 5k. The reason I like him as a trainer is because he's aware that I'm a better runner and he tries to not let that bother him. Although it probably does a little! The reason I go to his classes and use him as a trainer is to focus on my strength training. I find that my motivation for strength training wanes when I'm left to my own devices.

So this hopefully means we'll be able to help each other. He wants to make saturday morning runs part of his routine and while I don't get a great workout at this point I am sure he'll improve quickly. Also I like the company and getting a few extra easy miles in. Hopefully he'll get some better shoes too since he was wearing slightly worn out Nike Airs today.

There's also a new running route in town which we tried out this morning. It was super windy down the beach so we headed to the railroad tracks. They've been ripped up years ago leaving a trail from Yeppoon to Rockhampton, I'd be guessing but I'd say at least 50k long. I'm from CT where we have the rails to trails program where we now have beautiful trails just down the road from my house. When I was visiting I was amazed at how many people were out using them. It was great. We used to use them a bit before they were done up but they were full off potholes or large rocks left over from when they were rail lines. Now they are all stone dust and flat with proper drainage.

The trail in Yeppoon has recently started construction. I'm not sure how much they plan to fix up but I know they have paved parts of it. I hope they use some of it as a dirt trail like the section we ran today. Anyway it was really pleasant. Should be nice and hopefully fairly shady and cool. I will explore a bit further during my long run this week I think.

Now I have to decide whether I will do my scheduled run this afternoon. I should have done it when I finished with him but it started pouring so I headed home. I suppose I'll see how hot it is. My motivation still isn't exceptional for some of my faster runs in the heat but it needs to improve as it is 11 weeks from my half marathon in March. I really would like to break 2 hours but am finding it VERY hard to train and meet pace goals in this heat.

I've had a great couple of days in terms of healthy eating so today I will try to continue that trend on a weekend day :-)

That is great! It's good to have a new motivation. I like when people say they will do something and then they actually follow through with it.

Good luck in the heat with your training...to cool you down I'll tell you we went tobogganing tonight and it was in the low 20's, my toes are still frozen!

That sounds wonderful! I would LOVE to have a running buddy. Especially your martial art's trainer. emoticon
