Resolution: Balance

Friday, January 04, 2013

This morning, on the SP Class of Nov 4-11 2012 list, Dragonchilde asked about our resolutions. I'd decided on mine about a month ago: balance. I'd even blogged about it to make it real.

Balance of nutrition, exercise, parenting, and work.

Balance would mean not letting any one of those take over the others, but rather keeping all 4 alive and well.

So, as I settled in with a nice cup of tea to answer Dragonchilde's prompt, I realized that I was settling into my 2012 routine. In 2012, I was working part-time, with a huge emphasis on the "part." For 2013, I'm going back to full-time ... in just a few more weeks. As some of you know, I am not looking forward to it. But to achieve balance, I need to let a little more work start creeping gently back into my life, in manageable ways.

Sip. Swallow. Sigh.

2012 ended with a terrific burst of SP energy, and since joining I am down 8 pounds. 2012 ended with a lot of time (well) spent on SP. I've enjoyed every minute of it, and it has helped to keep me motivated and healthy. But as I wrote out my 2013 resolution, I realized my morning routine would have to change. I can't stay on SP for hours each morning anymore.

Sip. Swallow. Sigh again.

At that point, I checked out of SP, and resolved to cross at least 3 work-related items off the now-growing list. I did those 3, and then a few more. It took an hour. Not bad. I can do this.

Time for another cup of tea, and a quick SP break to plan out the rest of my meals for the day. Thaw the flounder for lunch, and have it with more of yesterday's fresh tomato soup. I can do this.

Sip. Swallow.

I'm still feeling a bit sick from a cold I caught while traveling, but before lunch I'll take a nice cardio break. Then, more work ... and then a late afternoon visit with my knitting friends as a reward.

Sip. Swallow. I can do this.

We all can do this, right? Wishing peace and balance for us all in 2013.

How are you doing? Hope you're feeling better. :)

Balance is important. One of my unfinished blog post ideas is on this, but I think you said things concisely and probably better than I would have. I liked this post very much because it expresses the very human aspects of trying to balance out one's life. It can be a bit of a plate-spinning exercise at times, particularly if we try to take on too many things.

Sounds like you are well focused on a more-balanced life and I think that is a capital idea. My world sometimes gets coloured with way too many competing activities, interests and responsibilities. It can be a challenge to prioritize everything. Sometimes it feels a bit like trying to drive multiple cars down the road - constantly stopping to run back and drive another car forward a bit. Focusing on the important things and letting the less important ones get shelved, if just for a season, is what I've had to learn to do. I'm still learning.

Yes, we can all do this.

We are strong. Strong enough. Stronger than we think.

    Make it a great day!

Yes, we can do this. "Doing" is what I need to work on too. I'm great at planning it, overthinking about it, procrastinating it, but doing it needs some work. Working on that too. I was proud that you stopped SP for that hour and got some tangible work done. Impressed is more the word. Hmmm... now I'm thinking about it. Motivated and sparked? You have planted a seed, now it's up to me to see if the ground is balanced and the gardener dedicated. Thanks for sharing. I believe you will find your balance and do great. Not perfect, but amazing results are on their way for you!
