Today DH and I took it easy. We went BANANAS!

Thursday, January 03, 2013

We did have to go to see the DR again. I already had this appointment and our regular PC rather our supposed to be regular PC was in.
DH and I always go to appointments together it takes 2 heads to remember everything.
Today since the wind was very cold I arrived at the office wheezing and coughing. DH was coughing when the Dr came in and today she checked my ears, throat, lungs and eyes. She impressed DH for certain.

I did tell her I had a back up plan for DH surgery. She thought we should get it over with but DH and I want to take it day by day and let the surgeons office decide at the class one week before. That class is next week and we will have to be feeling better than this just to do the long drive down there. Despite her suggestion DH and I are in agreement again.

We have been doing very little. Today we were out of chicken broth so we went and bought Apple Juice and OJ that I use in my hot tea.
We stocked up on canned chicken soups we rarely use them but I thought it would be a good idea to have plenty in the pantry.
If I am busy taking care of DH needs and keeping him company I might as well have some super quick items in the house especially with so much snow around.
I love sound nutrition but I also need to have a way to cut us some slack. I make crust less quiches and cook them in small Pyrex bowls. They are fast to make. Spinach works great and using Egg and egg whites they are a good protein.
Keeping lots of frozen Spinach in the freezer is an immediate source of leafy greens. I can microwave it and add it to the canned soup to enhance the nutrients. I can use it as a side dish with carrots when we eat our Salmon suppers we both love salmon and DH loves onions in anything.

I make apple crisps but they have been neglected since DH has no appetite when he is sick. I just love to eat cooked pears and bananas. I like them in my oat-bran in the morning. It keeps me satisfied for a long time.

When DH is not hungry I make him a micro waved banana (He is a Chocoholic). It takes me less than 2 minutes if I am slow but usually 1 minute at my normal speed.
I buy bananas very often. I look for the smallest size bananas in Sam’s where they sell them in 3 pounds bunches and I always take a minute to count them. I prefer 10 or more to a bunch, that makes them just 10 cents each this week because they were $1 for the three pound bag.

I split one banana and place it on a tea plate flat sides up and I put 8 Ghirardelli chocolate chips on the flat surface. Dark Chocolate chips
5 calories each 8 or16 chips for one banana. Microwave 1 minute with power level at 40%. And suddenly his appetite is back. He needs potassium for his heart health and he gets it that way often.

I eat Banana in my Oat bran (135 calories-1/4 cup bran 1 small Banana or 1/2) every morning and my leg cramps have diminished. I have been doing this for a long time.

Now I know I am getting better I never miss breakfast but lately being unable to exercise I am not hungry. I have been skipping lunch. I just drink 50/50 OJ and hot water. I have mentioned that earlier, I never drink anything COLD -Brrrrr! it helps me to feel warm since I am always cold these days.

Sorry it was a wandering blog. Thoughts just came out and I wrote them down. I think it might be the medications but I enjoyed talking to you all on my favorite subject. Good Nutrition.
Hugs Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon

This banana and chocolate recipe sounds so easy and lovely! I don't have a microwave (99% of the time I don't need one!) but I would make your recipe if I had one!

You are amazing taking care of the both of you so well, and coming up with those sneaky ideas to get DH to want to eat something that is so good for him.

I understand always feeling cold. I've spent the last 2 weeks in NC. I'm a native Floridian. And this week the low has been 22, the high 46. What a difference the sun makes. It finally came out today, and I felt human again. The 46 high felt like a bright spring day in Florida.

I wondered if you had a microwave? You could zap your juice (or any other drinks to get them whatever warm temp you want!! I started doing this with diet sodas when going through chemotherapy. Funny. I know. I don't drink them at all now. But at a time when nothing tasted right and I was always freezing, the microwave was a blessing!!

Pat, I've been out of touch and I'm sorry. I'll be thinking of Fred and you as his surgery approaches. Meanwhile, pack in those bananas! I was getting leg cramps and started up bananas with breakfast again.

You're in my prayers and thoughts!

That is a Great thing You do Going into the Doctor Together. That way the both of You knows what goes on and won't miss anything as You said. I'm in complete agreement in taking things day by day. The both of You need to be completely over this and well before DH goes for the surgery. The both of You need to be in the best shape possible for it. I have all but given up on Banannas because of being green, no taste, very hard and they go bad very fast. I tried putting a couple in the freezer and they came out mushy. So I threw them away too. I have made a lot of Banana Bread in the past when they get over ripe. Will have to try them again since they help with leg cramps. I have P.A.D. of the Legs. God Bless You and DH. Have a Super Nice Quiet Day. And Take Care. Hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Progress, yeah, keep getting better. I fed Erik bananas because he was getting leg cramps. Now, that he's better, and trying to cut back he still fits in a banana a day. I get aggravated at how big the bananas are sometimes. I love your chocolate banana idea.
Praying you are both well enough for his surgery.

Sounds like you are starting to feel better. Good sign that Fred had the strength to go to Dr and then to buy juices, etc.!! Maybe surgery will go as scheduled. I know both of you would like to get that over!!! Rest!

A good idea for you both to go in when one visits the doctor! I was impressed with DH's VA doctor this fall; he sent for me to discuss DH's slightly elevated PSA levels and was very thorough with me as well.

I, too, keep the canned soups just in case. I have used them during our two week "siege" of the flu between the two of us, but not all the time. I have prepared two or three new-to-us recipes as well on days that I have felt better. Yesterday I made a spicy chicken soup that I liked, and we will have leftovers today for lunch [I didn't sleep at all last night, so will be trying to make up for that this morning some, so am glad to have something already planned], and have already frozen the rest to use for a tamale type casserole later. We have advanced to soup at only one meal, though, so I guess we must both be feeling better to do that.

Always good info in your blogs, my friend.

Thanks...I'm hungry for bananas now, LOL! emoticon

Hope that you two continue to feel better and can go ahead with the surgery as scheduled, but I certainly understand why you want to wait until next week to decide.
Hope you two have a good day today!

Good to hear you sounding more upbeat and that you are starting to feel a bit better, even though you are still enduring that cough and wheezing. It takes a while to get over being as ill as you were, so be patient! I try to get bananas into my diet too, they seem to help my muscle cramps. emoticon

Your spirits sounds a little better today. Stay warm. It is minus 2 here this morning. Take care.

Yum on that chocolate covered banana! Get well soon!!!

Pat, your bananas are cheaper than here where
we grow them. I pay $2.49 a kilo which is 6 bananas.
That sounds like a great dessert. I hope you get better
by next week. I also have a cold and my eating is all
over the place. The blocked nose is the worst as I can't
I need to make some chicken soup but it is so hot and we
are eating mostly salads. Think of us here in the heatwaves,

I wish we had a Sam's club but Costco seems to be taking over. None of either in our area. We have a super Walmart but I never buy meat there because it is packaged in the South and trucked here. We have a good butcher shop in the next town so I go there.

It's good you are both feeling better. Keeping the canned chicken soup on hand is a very good idea. I love to hear about all the different foods you cook for the freezer.

Get well soon so Fred can have his surgery sooner than later.

Hi, I'm glad to hear you both are starting to feel better. Talking about your banana sounds really good, except I have the opposite, my potassium tends to go high so I'm on low potassium foods which chocolate and bananas are off my menu. Still keeping you both in prayer so that DH will be able to have his surgery.
