Since it is cold and flu season it is important to remember that any public place, including your gym can be a breeding ground for germs, dirt and other icky things. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy this winter while working to reach your goals.
Don't assume machines (including Pilates) and communal apparatus (including balls/hand weights/yoga mats) have been cleaned -- do it yourself before you start using them for your workout.
Don't let your bare feet hit the ground at the health club.
Pay attention to where your gym bag lands. Try to always keep your bag off the floor, especially in the bathroom and locker room. Remember that the germs at the gym will come home with you on the bottom of your gym bag so be careful what you do with it when you get home --- best NOT to drop it on the kitchen counter or table when you walk in the door.
Wet, dirty clothes can be a breeding ground for germs! Change your clothes before you leave the gym even if you don't have time to take a shower. Remove the sweaty clothes from your gym bag as soon as you get home and use an anti-bacterial spray inside the bag after you do.
