130103 Gluten Free try
Due to medical issues one of my sister’s doctors have advised her to try and remove gluten from her diet. Since she and her minions live with me it was decided to modify everyone’s diet. My sister will be on a gluten free diet for about a month, I will be on a greatly reduced gluten and the boys will simply be on a reduced. This week we are starting to cut back on the products with gluten in them, with the experiment starting next week (hard to start something with the New Year right in the middle of it.) So besides not buying items with gluten in them we have been finding gluten free recipes that conform with the added difficulties of other dietary restrictions. When I went shopping a couple of days ago I found a possible replacement for one of my breakfast items.
I love vitaTop Deep chocolate muffintops. I get my chocolate fix with not to much sugar and a lot of other vitamins to boot.
Food wise I track everything so I have a fairly good idea of what vitamins/minerals I am often short on and the vitaTops help with that and ensure I don’t have to take tablets or at least less of them. But it is one of 2 items I eat in the morning with gluten in them so when I found a possible replacement I figured to give them a try.
Udi’s does a gluten free version of my chocolate fix and after a couple of days of forgetting I finally remembered to bring them to work today and try one. It wasn’t bad. Like my vitatops I nuk it for about 30 sec to thaw and warm it (though putting in the toaster is better gives the crust a slight firmer texture). The gluten free was a bit drier, and had a slight texture like I was eating poppy seeds or partially ground flax seed in it. But over all not bad. It does have more calories (as well as higher sugar) then my usual vitaTop and less of some minerals. So I think what I will do is alternate days and pick only one of the non-gluten free breakfast items and keep the other item as I usually do.
