Training for my first Half Marathon!!

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Hey everyone!

I know I haven't been posting much lately but I'm still keeping the spark alive!

I was wondering if anyone has any advice or encouragement for me. My biggest fitness goal so far is to complete a half marathon! The race day is May 5th, 2013 and I believe you have to keep at least a 13:45 pace so you don't get picked up by the shame van, I'm not trying to go too fast but as long as I finish and get my finishers medal I will be one happy camper!

I know I need to drink a lot of water and that eating a few bananas daily will help. I'm trying to do squats/lungs and other strength work daily because I figure I can come at this race from all angles- trying to lose a few pounds, increase lung capacity, trying to strengthen my legs and trying to strengthen my mind to know I can do this!

I think I can do about 4 miles an hour, I know it's not -amazing- but at least it's a start! My goal for January I think will be to be able to continually do that 4 miles an hour, and maybe in a few weeks I'll increase that treadmill time to try to do longer periods at that pace before I start the training program in early Feb.

Bill- I will get some road experience later in the training- there's a 5 mile loop at a park I frequent but right now I work at a gym so it's easy access vs. a 30 minute drive so with my schedule I know I'm more likely to train and improve with a treadmill vs. waiting for the few times a week I can make it to the park.

Sleepy- Good to know! I'll have to check out the coconut water. Where do you buy that? Whole Foods?

Sticking to the training plan as much as possible will be key. And yes bananas are great for potassium but I also swear by coconut water for its electrolytes and potassium. I have very little soreness after my long runs thanks to downing some. My favorite is Zico Chocolate flavor.

I did my first half in November 2010 and last September I ran my 10th one. They are addicting!

Sounds like a plan. Why treadmill? Even id the weather is bad, you need to get a sense of running outside. Good luck!!
