Facing facts..

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Fact: I'm writing this blog before my day gets too busy and before I even glance at Spark email. That's a rarity.

Fact: I wore my fat mom jeans yesterday because.. well, for a lot of reasons really. I needed something that fit, most of all. I'm at the very limit of squeezing into the jeans I currently have.

Fact: I've gained ~25 lbs. Since when? Well, since my lowest weight of ~225, which was who knows how long ago. The lbs started creeping back on slowly, and then I threw my hands up and said 'whatever'.

Fact: I realized this morning that I feel better than I have in quite a while. Nothing spectacular, just feeling better emotionally and physically. Not that I was a wreck or anything previously. I've had a small case of the grumples (holidays usually mean emotional turmoil, give or take) but they seem to have passed. Physically, I've felt like a giant blimp. Today I feel like a smaller blimp. It's progress.

Fact: I'm tweaking my nutrition. I've turned off the diabetic meal plan, and the Spark meal plan altogether. It's a little daunting to look at a blank nutrition page, but I'm managing these last two whole days alright LOL I'm tracking nutrition again, where I'd stopped previously. For a few days of vacation, I'd log on and track my water, but even that fell by the wayside eventually. So I'm back to that habit once again.

Fact: I'm giving paleo/primal eating a try. My version of it, anyway. I'm hanging on to some things still that likely need to go, but I'm not ready to let go quite yet. I have eliminated wheat-based foods for the most part. I've eliminated a lot of refined sugars, and a lot of processed foods. I've cut back on the amount of fruit I'm eating, and upped the amount of veggies and meat. I'm keeping dairy, although not quite as much as before.

Fact: I've noticed that my complexion has improved. I'm adding more pastured butter and coconut oil to my cooking, and it's not bombing my face with breakouts. I even made it through TOM without any major flare-ups. That's highly unusual. Don't get me wrong, I'm no porcelain-cheeked cherub or anything like that, but my skin IS clearer.

Fact: I'm reading and researching more about paleo/primal eating. I'll tracking my nutrition, and I'm willing to put up with the admonishments from the daily nutritional analysis that I'm getting too much fat and not enough carbs. I'm willing to experiment with this way of eating to see what it does for me, if anything. I was quite successful when I did the Reboot vegan diet for 2 weeks. This is sort of like that, only with tasty meat included! Hard to argue with that.

Fact: I'm here. I wasn't for a while, or barely. Now though, I'm here. I'm one of those people who used the stroke of Midnight on Jan. 1 as a point of resuming my efforts. So shoot me.

Fact: I have a Fitbit One! My BodyBugg subscription expired, and I decided to try new technology. It was exciting that it could be hooked into SparkPeople, so that's what I've done. So far, I'm quite fond of the little device. It's much more unobtrusive, tucked away in my bra rather than on my arm. The Dashboard is interesting and fun to examine. There are a few features of the BB website that I miss, but as I get to know the FB dashboard more, I may find those neat things there as well. Bill has been so impressed with the information I'm gaining from the FB, he's decided he'd like the Fitbit Zip for himself. Done!

Fact: I'm still loving walking the kennel kids, and having them waiting for us over the holiday break kept us moving more than we would have ordinarily. We walked kennel kids early Christmas morning, and New Year's Day morning. We also walked our own kids, and they were quite appreciative and prancy! What a wonderful way to start off our year. Those pups touch my heart so much, and I always have my favorites who I simply adore, and who I cry over whenever they get adopted. Happy tears for them and high hopes for their forever homes and families.

Fact: I liked recording my nutrition and fitness data several months ago and I think I'm going to give that a try again. It helps seeing it out in the open. As neat as the Fitbit is, I'm not sure how I feel about not having to manually enter my activities for the day. Of course, it helps to HAVE activities to record. I'm sure I'll get it all sorted out to my satisfaction soon.

Fact: This has gone on long enough. I think I'm mostly caught up. I'm sure if I've forgotten anything, I can always post another blog. Neat concept!

I know exactly how you feel. I too used the New Year as a starting point, but I do not call this a resolution. I think that word is taboo...it makes me think of things that people promise and don't fulfill.

Good luck on your journey back to running fitness and a healthy lifestyle! I love my Fitbit too!

Sorry that your were feeling down, that you gave up temporarily sorry you gain weight back. They all seem to go together for me too. I too have been feeling down, not inspired to do anything for myself and gained weight back in June and never lost it. Not to mention I never hit my goal weight either

I am a click away if you need me.

hugs, Anne

Yep, I've gotta get back in the groove of paleo/primal; I've cut myself major slack in view of recent personal stress/upheaval...
But I've gained back every hard- fought ounce of what I had so painstakingly peeled off & can barely zip my size 16 jeans. Gotta blog about the discouraging experience of shopping w/old buddy J today (she wanted to buy me "something that looked good" as my Xmas present to which I answered "Good luck with that!")

Woo hoo! Kudos to you girlfriend! Glad you're feeling better. Walking the kennel kids sounds like a great way to get in some extra workout time. Rewarding in more ways than one...

I'm loving my FitBit too. It's helping me in more ways than I expected. Here's to a kickin' booty new year!

PS - One of my coworkers is a pretty die hard paleo diet guy. He lost 60 pounds with it. Seems to work well for him when he sticks to it. Apparently every now and then he caves to pizza though. LOL!

It's great to see you around a bit more and it's even better to hear that you are feeling better! I hope that you continue to feel good and get stronger and better every day!

Best wishes to you new plan. It's interesting to read how your skin has improved with your diet change. I'm very curious.

Love your info. on the FB - I've been very curious about them and especially the connection to SP. It's awesome to find tools to help us along our way!

I have missed you! Have a wonderful rest of your week and TGIF!

It never ceases to amaze me how on par we are with each other sometimes. Must be that 1/3 of the brain thing... Selfishly I'm so glad you're back since I am too. We both did this before Candy and we'll do it again. We'll mix some of the tried and tested tools that we used and we'll find some new ways to reach our goals as well. Just glad to know that you'll be there (about 2600 miles away!) doing this with me!

I've missed you but knew you said holidays would be quiet here.

I too am re-evaluating things. I have a lot of facts to face but I don't think I'm brave enough to post them here.

I'm excited about your Fitbit. A lot of people are posting about them. I might have to look into them.

Looking forward to our journey (sort of) together! Keep me posted.

I had to giggle over the "feel like a giant blimp" comment - not at, but with you. That's exactly how I've felt lately and you said it so simply!! Here's to feeling a little less like a blimp as the new year progresses.

I am happy that you are feeling up and ready to go (holidays are a challenge!). And it's so great you have the kids to keep you moving!

I did the low carb thing for a bit and just deleted the carb tracking and fat tracking here on SP (you can get rid of them, and get them back). Cause I didn't want to be "annoyed" with the daily "you're over" stuff. Just a thought.

Let's get moving this year!!

emoticon Blog! A true weight loss/fitness journey doesn't have a beginning and end - it is generally a long, winding rode of self-discovery, complete with bumps in the road, missed directions, and that occassional easy stretch where is all sees to come together (I don't know much about that stretch ;-) !) I really enjoy following your journey, and reading about the different things you have tried. It is all leading you to success - just emoticon

So glad to hear you are feeling better and finding things that work for you. I've heard good things about the Fitbit, I may eventually move to that (since it is so much less obtrusive and doesn't have a monthly fee), dunno. We have to try different things until we find what works for us--and that changes as we go along. I'm rooting for you to make 2013 awesome, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again in May hopefully!

Congratulations! Of everything I read above, the one overwhelming message I heard is "I'm back!" I think that's the key. Many nutrition plans and things will work for us but we have to be engaged..."I'm back!" Good job!

Nothing wrong with experimenting with new diets! I've heard good things about paleo.

I also turned off the diabetes meal plan.

Glad to see you aren't going to be defeated by regaining some weight. Keep your eyes on the goal, keep doing what you can, and you'll accomplish all of your goals!

Yay, I'm all for feeling good and it looks like you're well on your way to it as well. Great job on articulating where you've been and where you want to be. We all fall into slumps sometimes, the fact that you can pick yourself up and brush yourself off is fantastic. Hope you have a wonderful 2013!
