I Need Some Advice

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Hello Sparkpeeps!

Hopefully your 2013 is going smoothly so far. Mine is off to a bit of a rocky start healthy-resolution-wise. Struggling to get back to weight training yet. Between tweaking my back and being sick earlier this week, I'm making more snail than turtle-like progress.

I still have 363 days though. emoticon

Anywhoos... I was hoping you might be able to make some recommendations for me. My heart rate monitor died last summer, and I've decided that it's time to replace it. I've done some shopping online and in brick and mortar stores, and I'm more confused than when I started looking.

On the one hand, I need something like a watch with a timer that I could use for pacing during a 5K. On the other, I've been thinking about getting something like a fitbit to keep track of my overall burn rather than just an individual workout. Maybe I need/want both. I really like the idea of getting something that allows me to download data to my computer or an iPad app so I can track my progress.

What have you tried? Any suggestions on what I should look for? Right now I don't have a smartphone, so any tracking program would have to be desktop or iPad compatible. If I just went for the heart rate monitor and skipped the fancier stuff, any brands you've had success with?

Thanks for your feedback...

    I use a Polar FT4 and a FitBit

I adore both gadgets.

The Polar works great to track my calorie burn during a workout, and the Fitbit helps keep me motivated throughout the day to move!

I have debated getting one myself but have found it completly confusing. I would just google it or check around on fb.

My ipod has a fitness gaget on it, when I start it gives me the time/miles and cals burned. I look at time and miles and divide it bc it doesn't give me speed.

They are pretty cheap and you can have your music too. I just don't want a bunch of things on me when I workout. I have a body bugg someone gave me and I have never used it bc you have to buy the app for the laptop and sync them......too much work for me.

You could go on line to sports athority and check out reviews too....good luck and Happy New Year emoticon

I really don't know anything about heart rate monitors. One of our members got a fitbit for Christmas and then had to buy a new computer and the fitbit program locked up her computer so she had to uninstall the program and it took her two hours. So I will just wish you good luck on making a choice.

I like my polar FT60. Since I do a lot of water sports, I don't believe one of those armband trackers would work for me. I haven't investigated the fitbit.

Here are some nice overall reviews of heart rate monitors:

and pedometers (fitbit is in this category)

And btw you don't need a gadget to calculate your overall burn. You can do it with a spreadsheet and accurate food and weight tracking:
