A funny thing happened down the gym

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Actually it was a bit odd I was AT the gym, the reason I got there this evening instead of having the evening off that I'd promised myself is that they have hot water down the gym, something I haven't got at home at the moment, owing to my defunct boiler.

'Defunct boiler'. It sounds like a very offensive description of a woman of a certain (in other words my) age doesn't it? In this case it's a worn out gas appliance.

Anyway, while at the gym, before I allowed myself into the shower, I was pedalling away furiously on the stationary bike and I noticed something. This realisation has been creeping up on me in fact but I noticed it particularly because I had eaten a nice nourishing plateful of beans on toast before going to the gym (some of my SparkFriends who will remain nameless have broken into a guffaw at this point and you wrong me, really you do. I am a Lady and nothing untoward happened. That's all there is to it. Don't judge me by your own standards) and I could see myself sideways on in the mirror and, well.

Well!

You see, I used to avoid looking at myself sideways in the mirror when cycling because the sight of all that gut bouncing about put me off my stroke (to mix a metaphor).

Really, how can I express this? I now have much less poundage, much less bounce to the ounce. My shadow has certainly grown less. I'm not saying there isn't plenty of wobble still, but it's greatly reduced.

In fact, I even wish there was a mirror closer so I could have a better look.

PS: I'd been under the gym shower two minutes when the water ran cold. No kidding. It's just not my day.

Ha ha -- defunct boiler!!!! I think that is hilarious, even if it is very politically incorrect!
Congrats on your NSV Chantal --- and by the way, I loved your last blog because it was philosophical! :-) Keep on keeping on !

Well! Soon you will be regaling us with stories of clothes shopping!!

I hope your boiler is repaired soon. What is the time line on that? Miserable to be without heat or hot water in January. Thank goodness you have cats!

Two things that are definitely not over-rated, I've found, are hot water and heat (done without both a few times). But it got you to the gym and to a profound (okay, maybe not profound, but very exciting nonetheless) realization. "Less bounce to the ounce" - will be recorded into the Spark annals for posterity!

Yay for the reduced bounce! That is so awesome and such a great motivator.

Sorry about your defunct boiler and the resulting cold showers that seem to follow you. Surely someone has hot water you could borrow (I live in the US, other wise I would offer you the use of mine). Good luck on your search for a hot shower.

Yaaaaayyyyy! I love that you can see the difference in the mirror and not get bound up in criticizing those things still to be worked on. Hallelujah! Keep on pedaling and remember all that cold water builds brown fat. (sounds icky, but really makes you leaner!)

Too bad about the water, especially since the reason you were there was the lack of hot water at home! My sympathies.

Those moments of seeing yourself as a thinner person are truly monumental. Congratulations!! I can remember putting on a dress with a belted waist and when I looked in the mirror, I was shocked. I actually had a waist and could buckle the belt.

It wasn't me, honest! All I did was smile emoticon I won't be in the gym for a few weeks yet. The newest of the new knee replacements isn't even 2 weeks old yet. So I will just be cheering for my SparkFriends for now emoticon emoticon

Sorry for the loss of your water heater! Funny how losing hot water can be so devastating! Hey, but it got you out of the house and to the gym where you had such a wonderful epiphany (and a lovely cold shower, yikes)! I haven't been able to exercise this past month and while I haven't gained weight, my bounce has definitely gotten bigger!

Glad you have less bounce to the ounce-even though my clothes are smaller, and the scale says I have lost; I seem to have more bounce to the ounce. Sorry about your shower-that happened to us after the typhoon knocked out the power for 59 hours.

Yes, let's get rid of the "fun house" mirrors and enjoy who we are and what we look like. This is after all the only body we have to let's keep it in tip top shape. And yes, the water turning cold is my idea of horror after working out. Keep reminding us.....

I enjoyed reading your blog but lament the lack of good, solid hot water in a steady stream.
That too shall pass. What won't pass are your marvelous achievements! I have the midriff of Jabba the Hutt and all of my exercise programs have given me svelte calves and ankles and toes. It would marvelous if some of that svelteness could mov emoticon e Northward-Ho!

So did you get too excited about your reflection... so the powers that be threw a little cold water on your happiness?
It could happen.
But I sooner think that sometimes life just deals us some not so nice events.
Keep smiling... Life goes on... next time it will be someone else's turn for the cool shower.
