A funny thing happened down the gym

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Actually it was a bit odd I was AT the gym, the reason I got there this evening instead of having the evening off that I'd promised myself is that they have hot water down the gym, something I haven't got at home at the moment, owing to my defunct boiler.

'Defunct boiler'. It sounds like a very offensive description of a woman of a certain (in other words my) age doesn't it? In this case it's a worn out gas appliance.

Anyway, while at the gym, before I allowed myself into the shower, I was pedalling away furiously on the stationary bike and I noticed something. This realisation has been creeping up on me in fact but I noticed it particularly because I had eaten a nice nourishing plateful of beans on toast before going to the gym (some of my SparkFriends who will remain nameless have broken into a guffaw at this point and you wrong me, really you do. I am a Lady and nothing untoward happened. That's all there is to it. Don't judge me by your own standards) and I could see myself sideways on in the mirror and, well.

Well!

You see, I used to avoid looking at myself sideways in the mirror when cycling because the sight of all that gut bouncing about put me off my stroke (to mix a metaphor).

Really, how can I express this? I now have much less poundage, much less bounce to the ounce. My shadow has certainly grown less. I'm not saying there isn't plenty of wobble still, but it's greatly reduced.

In fact, I even wish there was a mirror closer so I could have a better look.

PS: I'd been under the gym shower two minutes when the water ran cold. No kidding. It's just not my day.

This raised a laugh at a time when I so needed to feel happy! Hope the old boiler is now in good working form or has been replaced a younger model.

I remember I once passed a mirror and did not recognize my B---

well that curve has smoothed out
but those thighs...that is entirely another story!!!

Wish my inadvertent glance in the mirror while doing yoga had shown less bounce! Normally I hide behind people so never really see the mirror, but over the holidays there were fewer people so harder to hide. Was shocked when glanced up at the teacher while doing the plank and caught a glimpse of my gut hanging down. Not the image of the firm plank that I seemed to be surrounded by when looked at others!

You know what...you just turned on a light for me. I am not sure why I never thought of this before, all I can say is thank you. I found the perfect reason to go to the gym now...HOT WATER. Not that I do not have it at home I do...very hot water, but in turn it is well water. Have you seen what well water does for hair over a short period of time. And the process we have to go though in order to get that rust from the hair. That's another story, today's is a wonderful realization.....I can go to the gym and wash my hair every day in city water.

Thank you thank you thank you...you have just solved two of the worse dilemmas I face. Getting the energy to get my butt to the gym on a regular basis and my hair.

Great post that I can relate to. Sometimes you just have those days. On the bright side though... the shivering from a cold shower has to burn some extra calories.

About the beans on toast, and what didn't happen, I'm celebrating a similar victory. I had bean soup for dinner, and then gave massages to 2 clients.

I'm so glad to know that you are truly seeing results! Positive reinforcement is definitely good!

So sorry, however, about the defunct boiler. Cold showers anytime are cruel, and especially in January. Much better luck next time!

I don't mean to make you mad but I got a kick out of your post. It sounds just like my luck. I am so sorry you didn't get your hot shower but after the visual of you on the bike and than imagining what you did when the water turned cold, well I couldn't help it i just laughed and laughed. Congrauts on being able to face the mirror. I exercise in a bodysuit so I don't giggle as bad. Now you can get a good laugh at my expense.

Congratulations on the jiggle reduction. It is a particular goal of mine to ensure, sometime in the near? future that my entire body will move as one during quick changes of direction. (as opposed to being followed, in a big, swishing motion by my less rigid parts, seconds later)

Congrats on the mirror nsv! The biggest challenge mirror-wise is to enter Marks & Spencer's dressing rooms. When you can go in there and come out smiling then you have arrived! I may have reached goal weight but it's still scary at M&S! emoticon Those 3 way mirrors should carry a warning in much the same way as the TV used to do, warning people of a nervous disposition before watching horror films.
