Happy New Year - Day 566 of the 50lb Journey

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Saehae Bok Manhi Baduseyo!! Feliz Ano Neuvo! Happy New Year.

Weight : Last recorded 242.1lbs (Dec 5th)

Last post - October. Not that I fell off the wagon or anything, just didn't record anything since the end of my Biggest Loser Challenge ended. And I just haven't had the dedication to keep up my blog.

To bring our returning viewers back up to speed. Shortly after our last blog episode, I started to have a weird pain in my left side/hip. It actually felt like someone was grabbing the top of my buttock on the left side and squeezing profusely hard. TMI, I know... Any how, Doctor, Tests, Pills, More Tests, Stronger Pills, Even More Tests, and they send me to an ORTHO. After on MRI, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc between my L4 and L5 vertebrae and also a healthy case of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis on the left side of my L5. I'm currently in Physical Therapy now to help with strengthening some muscle issues and teach me how to keep the inflammation down and reduce back stress.

Threw a bit of a kink in my workout schedule (No lifting over 20lbs, with a concession that I'm not giving up picking up my boy...) But no more monkey business with Liam such as the beach..

Anyway, I digress, yet again. After the diagnosis and recovery from being on nasty pain medication, I scheduled my first visit with my physical therapy folks. After a couple weeks, they increased my variety of exercises to really work on my hamstrings and IT Band. Leah my primary therapist admitted she thought I was joking when I said my left side has always been weaker than my right, and that my legs are tight. She still gets surprised by how much my right side gets accustomed to the new exercised MUCH quicker than the left. The ortho said my right side has been over compensating for so long for the lack of strength on the left that they are still trying to learn to give up control, or something like that.

They noted that I have a "deep socket??" thing on my left side too, which limits my rotational ability. I didn't really get all of that, just that I can't rotate my leg a certain way on the left side like I can on the right and not to freak out, that is just the way it is.

Anyway long story short... My exercise routine has to be reworked. Right now it's mostly chasing my crazy little boy around and walking around lightly. Couldn't happen at a better time of the year either.

With all of the issues, Thanksgiving and Christmas seems to have rushed by. Went to North Carolina to spend Turkey Day with the extended. Raced back up to the Bay to party with Grandma, work, pt, work pt, grandma's, work, pt, work, pt, etc. Before I knew it, my 4th?? Biggest Loser Challenge ended with me being 5lbs down, and the mad Christmas rush to get everything wrapped up for the year began. Fortunately I was able to carve out some vacation time so I could recoup mentally and physically during the holidays.

Liam and I kicked backed for the christmas season and just chilled out.

Though Liam did have to remind me to get up and unplug from time to time, even though I didn't have a stable internet connection!

I did try to do all of my PT at home exercises, and here is that list.

Lying Down Routines
Tilts - 10 secs X 10
Tilted Squeeze - 10 Secs X 10 (Wrapped up towel between knees)
Single Knee to Chest - 30 secs X 3 each side
Straight Leg raises with opposite knee up - 10 each side
Clam Shells (on side) two sets of 10 on each side

Seated Routines
Teapot Stretch to the side 30 secs X 3 each side
Seated Stretch to the toes 10 secs X 10

Standing Routines
Hamstring Heck (Stretch) on stairs toes up 30 secs 3 times each side
IT Band hip to wall closed leg behind 30 secs X 3 each side
Three way leg lifts (forward, side, back) 3 sets of 10 each side

I'll be honest and say I don't do them everyday. I just seem to get caught up in the day's activities and forget to carve out enough time and don't realize the day has ended until it's too late. But that is just an excuse which is really no excuse. I need to get back on the ball. Do my PT exercises, stay within my recovery parameters, but remember that I have to make up for lack of intensity with increased repetition of activities since a sustained duration is a limited commodity.

I'm going to make more time for my self this coming year, and I'm going to drive hard. I'm not going to say I'm going to hit X on this date, but I will make it a point to drive myself as close as possible and put all the effort I can.

After all, it's a new year!!

EDIT : Due to my slow typing this post actually didn't go through until 1201 AM on DAY 567, which is kinda funny in it's own way! Good NIGHT!

Glad to know you are doing better. I hurt my back this past summer and damaged my L3. Still isn't where it needs to be but I'm working on it.
Liam is so cute and has grown so much. You are looking great! Keep up the good work. Before you know it, you will be right where you want to be!
