Eating mindfully habits!

HAPPY 2013 Sparkfriends!!!!

Let me just start off by saying this morning I did Bob Harpers Kettle bell Cardio Shred workout......HOLY CRAP......intense...and I LOVED IT. 1,000 calories (according to the SP counter) burned. I know that isn't probably the exact number, BUT, I know I did burn a heck of a lot....I never realized this about kettle bell workouts........but I'm so happy I finally jumped on the bandwagon and tried them out for myself! I LOVE them!

As some of you know I've struggled with eating mindfully...and to really be honest about it...I've struggled with eating "normally"....I mean...I continue eating something because it tastes good or because I don't want to waste it or seem impolite if I'm at someone else's house..or things of that nature. REALLY?! I've struggled with this FOREVER. Still do.....BUT, I just started reading a book about eating mindfully (which I'll blog about when I'm done and highlights from it) and I put into practice some of what I've learned so far while eating our classic New Years Day (early) dinner today. The whole Idea of eating mindfully is being really intune to what you're doing.....seeing yourself picking up the food, feeling the texture, eating one bite TOTALLY before shoving in another, putting your fork down for a little bit between bites, really tasting what you're putting into your mouth. I got my plate ready...half of it salad and then the other half was divided with pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. (I LOVE mashed potatoes like no bodies business) Normally, my plate would have about a quarter salad.....a good portion of mashed potatoes and by good I mean BAD.......and then a bunch of sauerkraut and pork. So getting my plate to be the way I had it was a feat in itself. I did have one wheat roll as well, and wine (it IS a holiday.....) So while I was eating I really took the time to completely chew and swallow one bite before taking the next, really tasting the food, I even tried to eat with my fork upside down to eliminate scooping, also, putting my fork down on my plate for a little bit between bites. I have to admit, I actually ENJOYED my meal. I'm normally a VERY fast eater...done before everyone...then when it's a "special" holiday meal like this ..I'd go back for a little more. Today I did get a little more; HOWEVER, the overall total of what I ate was only equal to (MAYBE) the equivalent to what just my FIRST helping would have normally been. I'm starting to really think this eating mindfully stuff really works.....huh.......WHO WOULDA THOUGHT?!

I'm excited.

I feel in charge.

Love ya sparkies! Hope you're all enjoying your days! Here's to a fabulous fit and healthy new year!

I have the same struggle with food. Mind sharing what the book you are read is called? I am definitely interesting in reading it too!

Way to go, girl! You did a great job! I, too, have an issue with the mashed potatoes (mmm...) and eating mindfully. I can't wait to read your book review.

I *love* mindful eating!! I especially love paying attention to flavor and the state of my stomach, and knowing when my stomach says "no more!" even when my mouth is saying "so much yum!" :D

I like the idea of eating mindfully. It helps you take the full 20 minutes you're supposed to take to feel full. I've been unintentionally taking forever to finish my plate because of the little one, and I do end up feeling full at the end. I hope it works for you! :)

As to calorie burn, do you have a heat rate monitor? I got one last year and I LOVE it! Let's me know whether I'm actually pushing my body as hard as I think I am, and gives a really accurate calorie burn.

I really like the idea of eating mindfully. It's a simple concept that most of us don't do...including myself. I'm going to try to be more mindful at my next meal. I typically don't eat a huge meal in 1 sitting but I do eat relatively quickly. Thanks for the insight!
Best of luck in the new year!

These are great tips for eating mindfully, can't wait to hear your review about the book you are reading. I didn't know Bob had a Kettle bell workout! I will have to check that out! I have been loving my Kettle bell workouts, I have Jillian's Kettle bell program (Shred It with Weights) and Kettle bell kick boxing. The crazy thing is that you don't feel like you are burning that many calories, and it's actually fun!
