My True Motivation

It's very appropriate that on New Year's Day, SparkCoach asked me to blog about my underlying motivation for weight loss. For me this is a complicated question. When I think about it, on the surface I just want to look better and wear nicer clothes. Also, I want to look better in the sweater patterns I love knitting. But I know this can't be the basis for a long-term lifestyle change.

I have several deeper motivations for better health:

1. Feeling better on a day-to-day basis, so that I can be a better musician, wife, mother and friend.
2. Being able to rise to athletic challenges, like the half-marathon I completed in 2005 (running, not walking - hard to believe as I'm back to a beginner walking program now!)
3. Beating my depression - exercise helps, and feeling better physically and better about myself emotionally.
4. Being a role model for my daughter and also being able to do physical activity with her.

Sparkguy gave the example of a guy who wanted to lose 20 pounds so he could play basketball with his son. I don't think I have a single overriding goal like that, though I would like to run a full marathon and I would like to hike and bike with my daughter. For me it's more the exponentially better quality of life I would have as a healthy person.

    I have a similar issue to you, no overwhelming short or long term goal but to "be healthy" and "better quality of life"... and depression. I know what you mean about finding a quality base for change. I think the ones you listed are very admirable! emoticon

    I agree with you, for me my motivation is I want to learn to eat healthy and enjoy exercise, all the extra benefits such as wearing nicer clothes etc are a bonus.

Good luck with your journey in 2013, I will be riding the bike or hiking this trail with you.x
